The City of Tallahassee has powered down a part of the downtown core along Monroe Street Monday night to make repairs after an underground fire and manhole explosions rocked Tallahassee last week.<\/p>\n
The outage caught some businesses like Clyde’s and Costello’s unaware. The bar, which is a college student hangout, was plunged into darkness at about 10 p.m. and subsequently had to close its doors. Managers only found out what happened after talking to a nearby utility crew that informed them of the planned outage, which impacted about 200 customers.<\/p>\n
When reached for comment Monday night, city communications director Alison Faris said an email alerting customers of the planned outage was sent Friday and Monday.<\/p>\n
The email, which does not mention last week’s incident, said:<\/p>\n
Reminder: Planned Power Outage Overnight Tonight, Monday, Oct. 12, to Enhance Downtown Electric Network Reliability<\/p>\n
This is a reminder that the City of Tallahassee Electric Utility will be working in the downtown area overnight tonight, Monday, October 12, to strengthen the reliability and redundancy of the electric network.<\/p>\n
As part of this work, crews will facilitate a planned power outage in the downtown area from 10 p.m. to approximately 3 a.m. while they safely install new cabling equipment. Work was scheduled for overnight hours to minimize impacts to area businesses. Your address is within the impacted area, and as such, we wanted to ensure you were aware.<\/p>\n
We appreciate your patience as crews complete this important work that will help ensure continued reliable electric service to the area. Please contact us at 850-891-8533 or PIO@Talgov.com should you have any questions or need additional information.<\/p>\n
The outage was not promoted on the city’s social media, but was vaguely referred to in their report analyzing the cause of the Oct. 6 pre-rush hour fire, which closed parts of Monroe and Calhoun through the day as crews worked to patch the road that was cratered after the explosion. The report stated that an underground electrical fire was to blame and that combustible gasses trapped by sealed manhole covers due to a state repaving project may have fueled the explosion.<\/p>\n
“The downtown network’s redundant design maintained electric service despite the damage to the primary cable during the incident,” the city wrote in its investigative report. “To restore the network’s redundancy, crews will replace the damaged cable overnight on Monday.”<\/p>\n
The city’s outage map shows only about 75 customers out of power Monday night at about 11 p.m.. A Tallahassee Police Department spokesperson said crews are working on an underground cable on South Gadsden Street. She said the outage includes parts of South Monroe, North Monroe, South Gadsden, East Madison, East Pensacola, East Jefferson, College Avenue and East Virginia Street.<\/p>\n
Faris said the email went out to about 250 addresses. The works is expected to be completed by 3:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
