TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Griffin Heights Neighborhood Association held a community town hall Tuesday night to discuss Amendment 3 and its potential impacts on the community.<\/p>\n
If voters approve it, Amendment 3 would increase Florida\u2019s homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028 for non-school property taxes.<\/p>\n
Six featured speakers gathered at the Lawrence-Gregory Community Center to share information about amendments voters will see on the November ballot.<\/p>\n
\u201cAmendment 3 is a very important decision by Florida voters because under Amendment 3 you\u2019re going to pay more while some pay less, but we\u2019re all going to lose with cuts to fire and police, EMS services and other things like our parks and our libraries,\u201d said Edie Ousley, one of the speakers. <\/p>\n
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil, a speaker, shared his concerns about the potential impacts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here because we understand how devastating it can be to our community, particularly as it relates to first responders. We believe if that amendment passes, it\u2019s going to create a circumstance where some of our partners and community, those fiscally constrained counties, are going to be in terrible shape,\u201d McNeil said.<\/p>\n

Some, like McNeil, are raising concerns about the potential impacts, while others, like Florida Realtors, have been a leading voice for those supporting the amendment. Supporters say the amendment would put more money back in the pockets of homeowners.<\/p>\n
Regardless of where they stand, residents say it was important to get the facts and make an informed decision before heading to the polls in about three weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the people that came out that talked and spoke with us, it was very important for them to just come out and give us some knowledge and understand what we\u2019re voting for,\u201d resident Tamara Lockley said. \u201cI just bought a home here last October; I was so excited to come here and be involved in what they are going to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another meeting about Amendment 3 is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19, at Watson Temple on Brevard Street.<\/p>\n
