TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Hundreds of veterans were honored Tuesday morning as Leon County Government and the American Legion hosted the 13th annual Operation Thank You community breakfast.<\/p>\n
The event celebrated the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, offering a free breakfast to nearly 500 veterans and their families. Volunteers came together to cook and serve the meal as a show of gratitude for their service.<\/p>\n
This year, organizers prepared more food than usual, knowing many local veterans rely on SNAP benefits and could use a little extra support right now.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know there\u2019s a lot going on right now, so we work to make sure Veterans have the support they need,\u201d said Abigail Thomas, director of the Leon County Office of Human Services.<\/p>\n
Thomas also mentioned the annual breakfast has become a community staple since it began in 2012.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are just so grateful for the breakfast, and it\u2019s really important for us just to show them hey, this is the least we can do for the veterans,\u201d the director said. \u201cThey are excited to be with their fellow veterans and just celebrate the day together and get a nice warm breakfast before the parade.<\/p>\n
Thomas said there are more than 17,000 veterans living in Leon County. The county\u2019s Veterans Services Division works year-round to help local heroes access benefits, rental assistance, and other support programs.<\/p>\n
