Unless the guarantee provisions are changed beforehand, Richards’ presence on that opening-night roster would secure his salary for the season.

Why Saturday’s roster cuts do not settle Richards’ future

The league’s roster-setting process and Richards’ individual contract operate on different timelines.

Teams must bring their rosters within regular-season limits by 5 p.m. Monday. Because players spend 48 hours on waivers, most of the corresponding cuts need to happen by 5 p.m. Saturday.

Richards’ contract, however, gives Miami a separate decision to make before its first regular-season game.

Those dates matter when interpreting any announcement this weekend. If Richards remains with the Heat after Saturday, that would keep him in contention for a place on the opening-night roster.

It would not, by itself, mean Miami had committed to paying his entire salary.

The distinction also separates Richards from the broader task of reducing the training camp roster. Miami currently has 21 players: 14 on standard contracts, three on two-way deals and four on Exhibit 10 contracts.

The regular-season maximum is 18, including no more than 15 standard contracts and three two-way contracts.

Richards occupies one of the 14 standard spots after signing in late August. His decision is therefore about whether Miami wants to retain that particular player and guarantee his deal, rather than simply finding enough room beneath the maximum roster size.

Rebounding gives Richards a specific case to stay

Richards’ case rests in part on offering something different from Miami’s other big men. Erik Spoelstra has emphasized his rebounding, with the coach describing specific ways Richards can help secure possession rather than simply praising his effort.

In comments included in the report, Spoelstra praised Richards’ ability to retrieve the ball through traffic, above other players and beyond his immediate position.

The coach’s assessment covered practice work as well as the minutes Richards has received in games.

Spoelstra also identified an area that still needs work: the details of Richards’ pick-and-roll coverage.

His evaluation was encouraging without suggesting that the center’s adjustment to Miami’s defensive requirements was complete.

That balance is useful when assessing the roster decision. Rebounding can earn Richards consideration, but the Heat are also judging how reliably he can execute the defensive responsibilities that come with playing center in their system.

The public praise describes a useful skill set, not an announced commitment to a roster spot or rotation role.

Richards has approached the assignment in similarly specific terms, telling the Herald that rebounding has been a strength since childhood and that he tries to lead whichever team he plays for in that area.

His response to the uncertain contract situation also reflects a disappointing free-agent market. Richards said he expected the summer to unfold differently, but his focus now is on improving himself and his teammates while accepting the role Miami needs him to play.

Keeping Richards would preserve another roster option

The financial question is not simply whether the Heat would prefer to avoid guaranteeing another salary. Waiving Richards would reduce Miami to 13 standard contracts unless another player immediately replaced him.

Teams can operate with 13 standard-contract players for limited stretches of up to two weeks at a time, with a maximum of 28 such days during the regular season. Otherwise, they must carry at least 14.

That makes a Richards departure more than a standalone cut. Miami would also need to address the resulting vacancy, either promptly or within the permitted period.

The relevant comparison is the value of keeping Richards against the value and availability of a replacement.

Keeping him would not eliminate Miami’s ability to add someone else. The Heat would still have sufficient room beneath their first-apron hard cap to sign a player to a minimum contract in the 15th standard roster spot, even after guaranteeing Richards’ salary.

That flexibility matters because the choice does not require Miami to close off its final opening. The Heat can retain a reserve center and continue to evaluate whether another addition is necessary elsewhere on the roster.

There is also a frontcourt consideration. Beyond Richards, Bam Adebayo and Bobby Portis are the standard-contract players identified in the report as having substantial NBA experience at center.

Vlad Goldin provides another center option, but his two-way contract limits him to 50 regular-season games on Miami’s active list.

Richards would offer another experienced option across the full season if retained. Whether that translates into regular minutes remains a separate coaching decision, and neither his contract status nor Spoelstra’s praise establishes a promised role.

For now, Richards is waiting for Miami to decide whether the fit warrants a season-long commitment.

“Ultimately, it’s going to be up to them whether or not I’m the right fit,” Richards said.

Nick Richards can survive the Miami Heat’s weekend roster cuts and still enter next week without a guaranteed…

[9
8088,123,125,2490,124,168193,135721
post-427993","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami","tag-erik-spoelstra","tag-miami","tag-miami-headlines","tag-miami-heat","tag-miami-news","tag-nick-richards","tag-vlad-goldin
["GET
