SANIBEL, Fla. (WINK) \u2014 The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s Adopt-A-Mangrove program<\/a> is back for its fifth season with more room to grow thanks to a new grant.<\/p>\n

A grant from the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club will help SCCF expand its mangrove nursery. The program allows volunteers to adopt tiny mangrove seedlings and care for them before they’re planted at restoration sites as part of living shorelines.<\/p>\n

“Volunteers can take part in both the collection of the propagules, the planting of them in the nursery, taking care of them in their very own homes, and then actually seeing them take hold in their forever home here at a restoration site, and that’s really when you see it come full circle,” said Skye McDonald of SCCF.<\/p>\n

The young mangroves need water, sunlight and time to grow over several months. SCCF says the program is about more than raising a plant.<\/p>\n

“I love when people can remember these plants so fondly, and whenever they look out their window while they’re driving down the road, whenever they go out to the beach, they look at those mangroves and they remember that connection that they had with their little mangrove seedling. We had Barbie and Ken one year,” McDonald said.<\/p>\n

Before long, the tiny trees start to feel like part of the family, with names and personalities. SCCF says that personal connection is exactly what can turn someone from a plant parent into a mangrove advocate.<\/p>\n

“It’s that connection is really what’s important down here because that’s what makes people also take action when they hear a forest might be cut down, or take action when they hear there are other threats to those mangrove forests that are so vital to Southwest Florida,” McDonald said.<\/p>\n

The new grant will help build out a dedicated mangrove nursery on Sanibel. SCCF is looking to expand the program’s impact.<\/p>\n

“With this nursery, we’re looking to really boost our productivity and how much we can do for these coastal ecosystems,” McDonald said.<\/p>\n

The first adoption event is Friday, Oct. 17.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SANIBEL, Fla.
