ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla.
\n \u2013 Local leaders are working to tighten regulations on e-bikes at Jacksonville beaches, and residents got their first chance to weigh in Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Atlantic Beach held a community meeting to discuss proposed rules for e-bike riders. Atlantic Beach Mayor Curtis Ford said that legislation needs to be passed before injuries mount.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the data that proves that there are significant injuries occurring around the state and fatalities \u2014 not here in this area, but around the state \u2014 we need to be proactive to ensure that we don\u2019t have unnecessary injuries and loss of life at the beach,\u201d Ford said.<\/p>\n
What the proposed rules would cover<\/p>\n
Ford said he wants uniform regulations across all Jacksonville beach communities. The proposed rules would address:<\/p>\n
Speed limits on sidewalks and streets<\/p>\n
Whether riders can or cannot ride on the beach<\/p>\n
Ford did not specify during the meeting what those speed limits would be.<\/p>\n
Residents weigh in<\/p>\n
Not everyone at the meeting is pushing for stricter rules. Some residents say e-bikes serve a real need in the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cE-bikes can be beneficial for some people as far as transportation goes,\u201d one resident said. \u201cSome people don\u2019t have cars, or they can\u2019t afford a new car or a car period \u2014 so I think it\u2019s really important to have those legalized. But at the same time, there should definitely be safety precautions put in place.\u201d<\/p>\n
