SWEETWATER, FLA. (WSVN) – The world of \u201cStreet Fighter\u201d is heading back to movie screens.<\/p>\n
Based on the popular video game franchise, the series is back with its third live-action feature film.<\/p>\n
Advanced screenings of the new movie were held in CMX Cinemas Dolphin Mall and Regal Dania Pointe on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
At Dolphin Mall, Noah Centineo, the Miami-native star playing Ken Masters, surprised audiences in person.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, it\u2019s pretty incredible, you know, being from here and my stomping grounds being like an hour drive away from here,\u201d said Centineo. \u201cAnd, you know, I started acting here, and making it out to California was such a dream for so long. And so, it\u2019s cool. I feel very blessed. Very honored to be able to come back here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fans found the premiere incredible too, some appearing all dressed up to watch the film.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really wanted to make an outfit that was still reminiscent to the movie,\u201d said a viewer.<\/p>\n
Many reminisced of their childhood memories playing the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love Street Fighter, and it is very nostalgic for me, so I used to play the game back in the day,\u201d said a fan. \u201cI\u2019m an 80s baby, so.\u201d<\/p>\n
The star characters of this film are especially bringing back the memories for those who once played as them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI played Marvel vs. Capcom,\u201d another fan said. \u201cSo, Marvel vs. Capcom, Capcom had all these characters in it. Ryu, Ken, Blanka, which was my favorite character to play with, but yeah, I\u2019m excited for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Set in 1993, the movie surrounds estranged street fighters, Ryu and Ken Masters, as they\u2019re thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the Next World Warrior Tournament. The man throwing the tournament has some ulterior motives, though.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did a lot of research because, I think these kind of characters \u2014 iconic characters that live in the hearts and minds of the fans for so long that we, even though we are putting not necessarily our own spin, but our own life into these characters \u2014 it needs the research,\u201d said Andrew Koji, who plays Ryu in the new film.<\/p>\n
But it took more than research to bring the popular characters to life.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did two years of martial arts training when I was in drama school,\u201d said Callina Liang, who plays Chun-Li. \u201cBut like, you know, that\u2019s very surface level compared to what was needed for the caliber of filming this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Liang isn\u2019t the only one who recalls the exacting training needed for the film.<\/p>\n
\u201cSix weeks before our first day of production, we were all together in Australia,\u201d said Centineo. \u201cWe trained two hours in the morning stunts, two hours in the afternoon stunts, about an hour and a half in the gym, meals together as well, and that was, and then recovery for about one and a half, two hours. That was every day. Six days a week.\u201d<\/p>\n
Street Fighter hits theaters on Friday. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just like this wild, beautiful, colorful, massive world,\u201d said Centineo. \u201cAnd it\u2019s super fun, it\u2019s great for the family. A lot of action, a lot of humor. Kind of wild.\u201d<\/p>\n
