PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Port St. Lucie officials may soon install cameras at several intersections to catch red light runners.<\/p>\n
The City Council voted Monday to approve the plan.<\/p>\n
City Council members will need to vote on the plan a second time before it takes effect.<\/p>\n
The Port St. Lucie Police Chief says police are seeing an uptick in traffic fatalities.<\/p>\n
See also: 4-year-old Orlando twins shot after parents say gun was left under couch cushion<\/a><\/p>\n He says so far this year, in 2025, Port St. Lucie has had 12 fatal traffic crashes, which he says is one of the worst years on record for the city.<\/p>\n Police have identified 10 intersections in Port St. Lucie where they feel red light cameras would be beneficial to stop drivers from running red lights.<\/p>\n “At the PD, we are committed to leveraging technology wherever possible in order to multiply our force. Running a red light is a selfish act. It endangers the lives of other people,” said Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk.<\/p>\n The Police Chief did not say during Monday’s City Council meeting how much the fine would be for those who are caught on camera running a red light.<\/p>\n Find more ways to stay up to date with your latest local news.
