the highly recruited star for what he does with the ball in his hands. But on the field, coaches and teammates say his impact shows up just as loudly on the other side of it.

If you want a snapshot of Wright’s approach, don’t start with a touchdown. Start with a field goal block rep at practice.

Wright lays out, full extension, trying to get a fingertip on the ball. He barely misses. He hits the ground in frustration.

It’s not a performance. It’s just how he’s wired.

“He might be the most competitive person I’ve ever met in my life,” defensive coordinator Clayton Cason said. “When Bryson brings the fire, man, he sets the rest of us ablaze.”

At Ponte Vedra, Wright delivered the play fans expect. Mandarin put the ball in his hands on a direct snap. He made a couple defenders miss. Then he turned it into an 80-yard touchdown.

But the other momentum swings came on defense. Wright tipped a pass that led to an interception. And coaches pointed to two big hits — the kind that wake up a sideline and change the way an offense plays the next series.

Wright doesn’t treat defense as extra work. He treats it as the spark.

“Defense… we’re always hype,” Wright said.“We having the music playing… defense is going to always come out hard.”

Cason’s description of Wright on defense isn’t complicated. It’s a chess analogy.

“It’s like having a queen … in the middle of the field,” Cason said. “That can go anywhere.”

A player with that kind of range changes the board.

Offenses hesitate. They avoid certain windows. They start making decisions based on where he is — and where he could get to.

And at practice, Wright leans into that role. You’ll see him telling defenders to line up across from him. Telling them to bring it. Because the more pressure the Mustangs feel on a Wednesday, the less they have to invent on a Friday.

With Beachside next and two district games left, Mandarin isn’t talking like anything is guaranteed. They’re talking like it’s still earned.

Cason’s message stays the same. Handle your part. Do what’s right. Let the rest take care of itself.

And for Wright, the checklist starts with the first goal.

“District championship is the first step,” he said.
