WINK Listens<\/a> event, a family shared their concerns with WINK News anchor Russ McCaskey about the road being too narrow for the traffic.<\/p>\nC.J. Boehm, a 12-year-old seventh grader, had the idea to come to the WINK Listens event to tell the station about Roosevelt Street in Charlotte County.<\/p>\n
“There’s like no sidewalk, and cars can’t really get through,” Boehm said. “And we’re worried that people, for example, there’s a lady with her grandkids that walks down to the bus stop in the intersection, and could get hit by a car. And we don’t want that to happen. So, we came to make sure that we say this right now to warn.”<\/p>\n
After hearing Boehm’s warning, WINK News went to check out the road. It is a narrow road and there are no sidewalks.<\/p>\n
WINK News passed a woman on a mobility scooter and there was barely enough room for her and the car. Roosevelt Street used to be a dead-end street, but a number of years ago it was opened up and now connects to both Winchester and Placida.<\/p>\n
When that happened, neighbors say traffic increased. When two cars are on Roosevelt Street at the same time, one has to pull onto the grass and allow the other to pass.<\/p>\n
“I ride my bike on the road, but I always stay close to the right so I don’t get hit by a truck,” Boehm said. “I almost got hit by a truck when I was walking down to her before.”<\/p>\n
Linda Ware, Boehm’s grandmother, is concerned as well.<\/p>\n
“My mother lives next door to me,” Ware said. “She’s 87 and legally blind. She cannot walk into the road over to my house.”<\/p>\n
WINK News got in touch with Charlotte County. They said they had never heard these concerns before.<\/p>\n
WINK News put the county in touch with Ware, Boehm and their family. The next steps may include getting a traffic count and seeing what could be done.<\/p>\n
That is what Boehm was hoping for when he urged his family to come to WINK Listens to tell their story.<\/p>\n
“It’s just really dangerous there, and people could get hurt, and there could be an accident,” Boehm said.<\/p>\n
WINK News will keep in touch with Boehm and his family as well as county leaders to see what happens next and if improvements are made to Roosevelt Street.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.
