Two women were arrested and charged nearly 20 years after a man was robbed, shot and killed outside of his apartment in Lauderdale Lakes – a case that remained unsolved until now, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives said Thursday.

Brittany Hanfield and Sheila Arstil face first-degree murder charges in the May 13, 2007 killing of 34-year-old Leon Heron, who was just heading home to his wife with dinner from Taco Bell when he was attacked, investigators said.

Two people confronted him and demanded his property, but Heron fought back and got into a struggle with them, investigators said. Eventually, one of them took out their gun and shot Heron, killing him.

In 2023, a BSO cold case homicide detective met with Hanfield, who was in state prison, and who said she had information about a murder in Broward.

Hanfield claimed she was a witness to the killing, which the detective later learned was Heron’s.

“What she told me was ultimately what it ended up being was two 17-year-old young ladies who were out driving around Broward County in a stolen SUV looking for somebody to rob,” Detective David Towsley said.

An investigation later revealed that Hanfield was an alleged participant and not a witness, detectives said. It also led to the identification of the second suspect, Arstil. Detectives claimed the evidence against them – their DNA and confessions – is “strong.”

“His mother was so grateful to get this information, to know finally what happened to her son,” Towsley said. “She loves her son like nobody would believe, and all of these years, it’s been eating at her soul, as to what happened to him. Why was he targeted? Why was he killed? So, I was very happy to bring her that information.”

Hanfield and Arstil are being held without bond.

Two women were arrested and charged nearly 20 years after a man was robbed, shot and killed outside…

[17
19535,249,251,250
post-428963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-lauderdale","tag-cold-cases","tag-fort-lauderdale","tag-fort-lauderdale-headlines","tag-fort-lauderdale-news
["GET
