Two transitioned to Billings Clinic Broadwater, including nurse practitioner Meagan Watne, while the other two returned to St. Peter’s in Helena.

“A lot of the services we were providing in Townsend were also being provided by the Billings Clinic Broadwater facility,” said Brian Lee, St. Peter’s Health chief operating officer. “Fortunately, they had an opportunity for the nurse practitioner that was at our clinic to move over to their clinic and continue to serve patients there.”

St. Peter’s Health

St. Peter’s Health building in Townsend

Lee described the consolidation as “an opportunity to unify primary care services within the community.”

    Broader partnership discussions

The change in Townsend comes as St. Peter’s Health and Billings Clinic-Logan Health explore a broader partnership.

Evan Charney, MTN News

Signage for a St. Peter’s building in Helena

The organizations publicly announced those discussions on July 14, saying they were looking at collaboration in areas including clinical services, workforce development, technology, purchasing and operational efficiencies. Both organizations have said the discussions are not aimed at a merger or acquisition.

St. Peter’s said letters were sent to patients and residents in August ahead of the Townsend transition.

Lee said consolidating services allows the healthcare systems to reduce duplicated administrative burdens and fixed costs while maintaining access to care.

Billings Clinic leaders say those efforts are increasingly important as rural healthcare providers face challenges recruiting and retaining employees.

Evan Charney, MTN News

A nurse works at the Billings Clinic in Townsend

“Healthcare headwinds are challenging in the rural area with clinical services, hiring providers hiring staff become a challenge,” Miller said.

“Sustainability is probably the key word in this,” he added.

Lee said the distance rural Montanans sometimes have to travel for medical services is part of what makes maintaining local care important.

“It is a hardship to have to travel for care for many people across our state,” Lee said. “We live in a very rural state and travel for healthcare is tough.”

    What patients need to know

Watne is now seeing patients at Billings Clinic Broadwater. Oak St. in Townsend, provides local services including emergency care, lab work and imaging.

Miller said the consolidation could eventually give patients access to more services in one place.

“They will have more access to a one-stop shop where they can get their labs and radiology and eventually a visiting specialist,” Miller said.

Evan Charney, MTN News

Medical equipment sits in an exam room at Billing Clinic

St. Peter’s says the two organizations are exploring opportunities for St. Peter’s specialists to visit Billings Clinic Broadwater, potentially including providers in orthopedics, general surgery, neurology, and cardiology.

Patients transitioning from St. Peter’s should also be aware that their medical records may need to be transferred.
