On the ballot is a charter amendment referendum that asks voters to decide whether Lee County should transition from an at-large voting system to single-member districts for the Board of County Commissioners starting with the 2028 general election. Voting “Yes” on this amendment is an essential step toward ensuring fair, accountable, and truly representative local government.

Currently, Lee County operates under a traditional at-large system. While county commissioners are required to reside within specific geographical districts, all voters across the entire county vote for every seat on the board. Under the proposed single-member district model, residents would vote exclusively for one county commissioner who lives in and directly represents their specific district.

Lee County is home to approximately 900,000 residents and ranks as Florida’s eighth most populous county. It is vast, geographically varied, and economically diverse. Yet, among the eight largest counties in Florida, Lee stands alone as the only one that continues to elect its county commissioners entirely on an at-large basis. Transitioning to single-member districts will modernize Lee County’s elections, bringing us in line with the rest of the state’s major metropolitan areas.

The county’s distinct communities have unique needs that demand focused representation:

• District 1 (Coastal & Islands): Encompasses Sanibel, Captiva, Pine Island, Boca Grande, and southern Cape Coral — areas heavily defined by coastal conservation, tourism, and waterfront residential communities.

• District 2 (Urban Core): Centers around Fort Myers, Gateway, and Pine Manor — serving as the commercial, governmental, and historical heart of the county.

• District 3 (South Coastal & Suburban): Spans Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Florida Gulf Coast University — a rapidly growing suburban corridor and educational hub.

• District 4 (Northern Suburban): Covers central and northern Cape Coral and North Fort Myers — dominated by dense residential canal networks and commercial centers north of the Caloosahatchee River.

• District 5 (Rural & Inland East): Spans Lehigh Acres, Alva, Buckingham, and East Fort Myers — a unique blend of rural agricultural lands, nature preserves, and high-density inland neighborhoods.

Switching to single-member districts provides direct accountability. Voters gain a clear point of contact on the board, making it easier to raise community concerns, request local infrastructure improvements, and demand tangible results.

Furthermore, at-large elections inherently favor well-funded, well-connected candidates who can afford expensive, countywide media campaigns. District-based races dramatically reduce campaign costs, enabling grassroots leaders and working-class citizens to run competitive campaigns. History underscores this structural disadvantage. At least 14 times in 23 past Lee County Board of County Commissioners elections: a candidate received the most votes within the district they lived in, but lost the countywide, at-large election.

Single-member districts also ensure that rapidly growing inland communities — such as Lehigh Acres, Dunbar, and North Fort Myers — receive dedicated advocacy rather than having coastal population centers dictate all five seats. For unincorporated areas without municipal city councils, the County Commission is their only local government. They deserve focused, tailored representation.

Finally, single-member voting eliminates voter confusion. Selecting five distinct representatives across a vast county dilutes responsibility. A single-member district system offers a straightforward promise: You vote for your district’s commissioner, and that commissioner is directly accountable to you and your neighbors.

Voting “YES” on the charter amendment is a step toward a fairer, more inclusive, and responsive Lee County government.

Sandra McClinton

Cape Coral

To the editor: With vote-by-mail ballots already circulating and Election Day on Nov. 3 fast approaching, Lee County…

[14
209,211,210
post-429868","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cape-coral","tag-cape-coral","tag-cape-coral-headlines","tag-cape-coral-news
["GET
