LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — This weekend we’re expected to see more heavy rain in our area.

This may be exactly the kind of weekend forecast that many people in Port St. Lucie do not want to hear.

Last week, parts of the city flooded when torrential rains hit Port St. Lucie.

According to our Stormtrac meteorologists, the city got about four inches of rain in a 48 hour period last week.

Roads turned into lakes, water levels in canals rose quickly, and some drivers took their chances and drove through standing water deep enough to possibly leave them stalled with nowhere to go.

One homeowner, who has a canal directly behind his house, says he was stunned to see the extent of the flooding. It was the worst he’s seen in the two years he’s lived in Port St. Lucie.

See also: Trump expected at Mar-a-Lago as Palm Beach road closures, No Kings rallies are planned

“When I came out, I was like, Oh, my God! I’ve never seen it like this before!” said Peter Rodriguez, who lives at the intersection of SW Todd Avenue and SW Broadview Street in Port St. Lucie. How concerned is he about the possibility of another flood this weekend?

“I don’t think it’s gonna get that high. If it starts getting that high, then I’m gonna start to pray. Not another flood,” he said.

Luckily floodwater did not get into his house. But the water was deep enough he says, to prevent him from driving out of his driveway.

One resident says he feels the city of Port St. Lucie could be doing more to prevent such flooding.

“I really think they should do something, I mean really to take care of business, you know because we pay our taxes,” said Frank Camarda, a Port St. Lucie resident on SW Leisure Lane.

A city spokesman says they’ll have Public Works employees on standby this weekend if heavy rain comes, if they need to clear storm drains or move pumps into position to lower water levels in certain areas such as near the intersection of Savona Boulevard and SW California Boulevard. That area has been prone to flooding in the past.

“They’ve been monitoring the canals and the retention ponds. And again, they haven’t had to lower them this week which is a good sign. They’re where they think they need to be. So, we’re as prepared as we can be. You never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at you, but this team is doing everything it can to try to to mitigate the risks as much as possible,” said Scott Samples, Strategic Communications Manager and Public Information Officer, city of Port St. Lucie.

He says the city of Port St. Lucie received no reports last week that floodwaters got into any homes or businesses.

PORT ST.
