The software could also help investigators and analysts identify connections and share critical information during criminal investigations.

The proposal drew public opposition and was initially delayed after Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak and others raised questions about potential civil liberties violations.

Council Member Luis Viera also questioned during an earlier discussion whether the software had any connection to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, and how information could be accessed or shared with other law enforcement agencies.

Shriver said Peregrine has never worked with ICE and would not share Tampa data with another agency or Peregrine customer unless the department explicitly instructed the company to do so in writing.

“Whether it’s ICE or any other agency in the country, Peregrine will never share Tampa data with another agency, with another Peregrine customer, if we are not explicitly told in writing to do so,” Shriver said.

Shriver said Peregrine does not collect information on citizens or conduct surveillance. He said the company provides tools to connect data already available to police, while the department decides how that information is used and who can access it.

“Peregrine does not own any of the underlying data. Just because we ingest it and make it useful for the department does not mean we have any legal control over it,” Shriver said.

In a statement, the Tampa Police Department said:

“The Tampa Police Department remains committed to evaluating and using technology that improves our effectiveness to help keep our community safe. Peregrine software provides the department with a way to streamline searches and analyze information the department already has access to within a single system. For example, during a hurricane, large-scale events, or heavily visited areas like Ybor, supervisors could use the system to view calls for service, officer locations, and available assets in one place, allowing them to make real-time decisions about the deployment of personnel and resources. The software can also assist investigators and analysts by making it easier to identify connections and share critical information during criminal investigations. The goal of implementing this technology is to use information and resources already available to more efficiently fulfill our mission of improving quality of life and making Tampa safer together.”

The department says Peregrine will help connect existing information, while the company says it will not share Tampa…

[10
135,137,136
post-430206","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tampa","tag-tampa","tag-tampa-headlines","tag-tampa-news
["GET
