LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Two men are out of jail on bond after being arrested in two separate hit-and-run cases in Port St. Lucie this week, according to the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

According to an arrest affidavit, 23-year-old Giovanny Barthelemy was driving a silver Toyota Highlander around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday when it collided with a 16-year-old riding an electric motorcycle on Southwest Roma Way near Southwest Lorenzo Way.

A security camera at the community clubhouse recorded the crash. The officer wrote that the video shows the SUV turning into the community entrance as the teen crossed in front of it. The teen was thrown from the motorcycle. The affidavit says the SUV then backed up and drove away while the injured teen lay on the ground waving his arms.

The teen was taken to Tradition Medical Center and then flown to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. Police said he broke his left femur and hurt his left ankle, and he was listed in serious but stable condition.

See also: Rapper Rick Ross arrested in Florida on domestic violence charges, enters not guilty plea

One witness told police the electric motorcycle had no headlights. Two witnesses said both vehicles were going fast.

The SUV’s owner, the father of Barthelemy’s girlfriend, called 911. He told police Barthelemy said he had hit someone on a bike and then driven home.

Officers found Barthelemy at his home on Southwest Ridgecrest Drive. According to the affidavit, after being read his rights, Barthelemy told police he felt and heard the crash and knew right away he had hit a person. He told police he should have stopped but didn’t, and said his phone was dead, according to the affidavit.

Barthelemy is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries, which is a felony. He was also given a traffic citation. He was released on a $7,500 bond.

The second case happened earlier that afternoon. Around 3:35 p.m. Tuesday, a Port St. Lucie officer clocked a silver Toyota going 85 mph in a 40-mph zone, according to an arrest affidavit.

The officer turned around and tried to stop the car. The affidavit says the driver went over a concrete median into the opposite lanes, ran a red light, and hit a traffic sign at Southwest Becker Road and Southwest Hallmark Street before getting on northbound Interstate 95.

The officer turned off his lights and siren but kept the car in sight. Police said the car later broke down on the side of I-95. Officers said the driver, 19-year-old Christian Johnson, got out and ran toward the back of the car. A Port St. Lucie detective, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, and the officer surrounded the car, and Johnson was taken into custody.

According to the affidavit, Johnson’s license had been suspended three times in St. Lucie County.

Johnson is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, reckless driving and driving with a suspended or revoked license. All three charges are misdemeanors. He was released on a $12,500 bond.

In a statement about both arrests, the Port St. Lucie Police Department said drivers are legally required to stop, whether it’s for a traffic stop or after a crash.

“Fleeing from law enforcement or leaving the scene of a crash can have serious consequences,” the department said.

PORT ST.
