The students were for the most part quiet during the Q&A, but they exploded in enthusiastic shouts when they heard the names of their fellow students as they were introduced.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Students in Sally Ride Elementary School's Aviation and Aerospace Magnet Program listen while NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney talk to them live from the International Space Station, Friday, October 16, 2026. 26 students posed questions about living in space as a part of NASA's In-flight STEM Downlink program. So really, all subjects, all aspects are really important. If you like something and you’re interested in it, just stick to it, and I think you can apply it to future space exploration.”

Keitlyn Santos, a Sally Ride alumna who is now in eighth grade, attended the event, too. And then it becomes a crew event to try to eat what is moving about the capsule or the compartments here.”

Watkins, who has a backgound in geology, was perhaps the most enthusiastic answering a question from fifth grader Jack Loayza-Ramirez about what rocks on Earth can teach about Mars.

“I absolutely love this question.
