Magic<\/a> forward Noah Penda<\/a> suffered a partially torn right hamstring during Friday\u2019s preseason game against the Miami Heat<\/a>, the Orlando Sentinel learned Saturday night.<\/p>\n

While Penda\u2019s return to action will depend on how he responds to treatment, he is expected to be out for a significant period, the Sentinel was told.<\/p>\n

Penda had missed time in training camp due to a right hamstring strain, but the injury he suffered on Friday is different. While it\u2019s the same leg, Penda partially tore a different part of the hamstring. His previous hamstring strain had fully healed before he returned to play.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Magic will also continue to evaluate the right shoulder of star forward Franz Wagner<\/a>, the Sentinel learned. Wagner exited Friday\u2019s exhibition because of soreness. It remains unclear if he could miss more time.<\/p>\n

In addition, Magic guard Jase Richardson<\/a>, who left Friday\u2019s exhibition in the third quarter because of a sore lower back, is considered day-to-day.<\/p>\n

The injuries come at a tough time for Orlando, which opens the regular season Wednesday against the Hawks at Kia Center<\/a>. The Magic were without Anthony Black (right ankle sprain) and Jonathan Isaac, who continues to rehab a left knee sprain suffered last season, throughout their four preseason games.<\/p>\n

Penda had stayed relatively healthy during his rookie campaign. He appeared in 59 regular-season contests and was a healthy scratch 21 times. He was inactive for another two games. The French forward averaged 3.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists during 12.8 minutes per night.<\/p>\n

While Richardson also didn\u2019t miss much time as a rookie due to injuries, he did deal with some back problems. He missed two games in early March due to low back spams. In addition, he missed one game in January due to a sore left ankle while he was a healthy scratch in another 25 contests.<\/p>\n

Of the bunch, it was Wagner who\u2019s been plagued by injury the past two seasons. Of the possible 164 regular-season games in that span, the German forward only appeared in 94 games, or just 57.3% of the available contests.<\/p>\n

During the 2024-25 campaign, Wagner missed 22 total games, including 16 because of a torn right oblique. This past season, he missed 48 contests, including 16 due to a left high ankle sprain and an additional 30 managing the injury.<\/p>\n

Wagner returned from the offseason healthy but exited Friday\u2019s preseason finale against the Heat four minutes into the second half. He was grabbing at his right shoulder after a defensive possession and appeared in more pain following a 3-point shot. He initially sat on the bench but later went to the locker room before returning to the bench again.<\/p>\n

Wagner ended with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists in 19 minutes.<\/p>\n

Penda, who shed weight in the offseason, had only played two minutes of Friday\u2019s contest. After a fast break, grabbed the back of his right leg. He went straight to the locker room and did not return.<\/p>\n

Richardson notched two rebounds and two assists in seven minutes before he was ruled out early in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

New Magic coach Sean Sweeney, who\u2019s entering his first season as a head coach in the NBA after years as a top assistant, talked recently about his outlook on managing injuries from a roster standpoint.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust in general what I would say is, anytime somebody\u2019s out, it\u2019s another opportunity for someone else,\u201d Sweeney said last Saturday<\/a> before Orlando traveled to Cleveland for its second preseason game. \u201cThe other thing that it allows you to do when you play is it allows you to learn a little bit more about what is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd at the end of the day, you\u2019re always trying to prepare for the test, take the test, make the corrections on things you need to correct and then move forward,\u201d Sweeney added at the time.<\/p>\n
