(WSVN) – Thousands across South Florida took to the streets on Oct. 17 as part of a nationwide \u201cNo Kings\u201d day of action.<\/p>\n
Participants rallied against President Donald Trump and what organizers call an overreach of presidential power.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m here to fight for our democracy and our freedom of speech,\u201d said protester Dennis Layva.<\/p>\n
In Coral Gables, about 30 demonstrators gathered outside Merrick Park with signs in hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cImmigrants make our world,\u201d said Coral Gables protester, Kiera O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n
In Miami, demonstrators took their message above Interstate 95.<\/p>\n
Participants held signs along the Northwest 147th Street overpass, hoping to reach drivers passing below with their message.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need everybody\u2019s vote,\u201d said protester Marie Korenstein.<\/p>\n
Another protest in Miami, off 79th Street, aimed at gathering the community and informing them of their rights.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re something, we\u2019re not nothing,\u201d said participant Matias Sanchez.<\/p>\n
Protesters lined the streets in Coral Springs as well, near Sample road and University drive.<\/p>\n
Their message to onlookers was to protect democracy and to encourage fellow Americans to make their voices heard at the ballot box.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolute outrage at the corruption we\u2019re seeing in our government,\u201d said a Coral Springs protester.<\/p>\n
In Broward County, demonstrators gathered outside ArtServe along Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n
Their rally focused on the importance of early voting, with Florida\u2019s election season underway.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve seen neighbors not allowed to be in this country, and they\u2019re good people,\u201d said demonstrator Nancy Landman.<\/p>\n
The larger nationwide movement involved more than a thousand planned actions across the United States.<\/p>\n
As the country heads toward midterm elections, the message of these demonstrators is clear: they want their voices heard.<\/p>\n
\u201cDefinitely need a change, not only for us, but for the future generations,\u201d participant Julio Velasquez said.<\/p>\n
