British singer-songwriter Grace George has just reached a stunning level of global recognition \u2013 crossing the 100-million-listener peak of Spotify streams, performed across the United Kingdom and a still-growing international following with her crystal-clear vocals and acoustic interpretations of familiar hits.<\/p>\n

But it is here in Tallahassee that Grace will make her long-awaited American debut, Tuesday night, at Goodwood\u2019s Carriage House, as part of Florida State University\u2019s renowned Opening Nights performing arts series. \u00a0During their visit, Grace and her mom, Lorraine, have something else on their minds, too.<\/p>\n

Target.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God \u2013 we’re going to get two trollies, and I don’t know how we’re going to get it all home,\u201d laughed the effervescent singer, whose sold-out concert has been eagerly embraced by local fans of great pop music.<\/p>\n

Lorraine isn’t just along for shopping. She has always been an indispensable part of Grace’s decidedly old-fashioned, family-run musical operation, serving as stage manager, sound technician and chief ironer of fancy clothes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would I have anybody else on my team? Who would be more honest with you than your own family?\u201d Grace said.<\/p>\n

Music runs deep in the family. Grace’s father, who died when she was only 13, loved music but preferred to stay out of the limelight. His daughter clearly inherited the love of music, but it is accompanied by a powerful joy and passion for performing. She’s been playing live shows since she was 14, performing everywhere from pubs to weddings to larger events.<\/p>\n

Armed with a guitar and a loop station, she builds her own backing tracks, layering harmonies, rhythms and melodies into a one-woman show. Her repertoire ranges from original pop music to inventive arrangements of well-known songs \u2013 and some original tunes.<\/p>\n

Her covers have even been featured on the British television series Love Island.<\/p>\n

\"Grace<\/a><\/p>\n

The reviews have been glowing. Mac Maclaren, editor of the British live-music guide Lemonrock, praised her ability to command an audience, describing her vocal control as among the best he’d heard.<\/p>\n

But it’s the personal connections that seem to mean the most to Grace.<\/p>\n

Ever heard of a \u201clabor playlist\u201d?<\/p>\n

That’s the music expectant mothers play during childbirth.<\/p>\n

\u201cA fan wrote me and said, \u2018Grace, just wanted you to know my baby came out to your song,\u2019\u201d Grace said, beaming. \u201cPeople have walked down the aisle to my music. Their first dance. To play a role in the biggest days of their life is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

So how did a British singer-songwriter wind up making her American debut in Tallahassee?<\/p>\n

Enter Ron Sachs.<\/p>\n

The not-so-retired founder of Sachs Media stumbled across a video of Grace covering the Bryan Adams hit \u201cHeaven\u201d and was mesmerized by her amazing voice.<\/p>\n

On a subsequent trip to the United Kingdom, Sachs and his wife, Gay, made a point of attending one of her performances at a pub outside of London. He met Grace and her \u201cmum\u201d Lorraine afterward and pitched the idea of performing at Opening Nights.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Ron said I might have my own show, I was over the moon,\u201d Grace said.<\/p>\n

The two have since struck up a friendship, with Grace describing Sachs as someone who \u201cspreads positivity and love.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to her musical artistry, Grace has practiced another kind of art: martial arts.<\/p>\n

She earned a karate black belt at age 11, becoming, she says, one of England’s youngest to achieve the rank. And while she admits she’s rusty, she figures she still has enough muscle memory to be dangerous.<\/p>\n

But music remains her great passion.<\/p>\n

Ask Grace about her ultimate dream, and the answer comes without hesitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m living it,\u201d she says. \u201cI get to do music for a living. Just to be able to meet people and share my music and have people listen to it worldwide and perform for people \u2026 I just love people.\u201d<\/p>\n
