A Miami-Dade couple said they watched thieves steal their SUV right in front of them while they were out walking their dogs on Sunday.<\/p>\n
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, just after 10 p.m., deputies arrived at the area of 82nd Avenue and Northwest Eighth Street after receiving reports of a stolen vehicle.<\/p>\n
Surveillance video shows the moment a black Honda HR-V speeds out of an apartment complex.<\/p>\n
Seconds later, Christian Gonzalez and his fianc\u00e9, who were walking nearby, realized something shocking \u2013 that the vehicle racing away was theirs.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe started screaming at me, saying, ‘That’s my car, it’s my car, they’re stealing my car,'” Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
“I had to drop what I was doing with the dogs,” he said. “I threw my phone, I ran out of my sandals, and I tried to chase after the car as best I could.”<\/p>\n
But it was too late.<\/p>\n
Video from the Azul at Fontainebleau appears to show an SUV similar to the one reported stolen entering the property. Less than 15 minutes later, two SUVs can be seen leaving together.<\/p>\n
“When we spoke to the sheriff’s office, they said that, unfortunately, it’s very common for not only the Honda HRVs, but also for general cars that have push buttons because they all start electric,” Gonzalez said. “So all you need is just a small sensor for the car to recognize that somebody’s trying to open it, they open it, they turn it on, they hotwire it, however they do it, and then they take off.\u201d<\/p>\n
The couple contacted NBC6 to share their story and warn other drivers. They said they’ve heard of similar thefts happening in the area.<\/p>\n
“My fianc\u00e9 coincidentally had another friend whose family lives here. Her car got stolen and unfortunately was never able to be reclaimed,” Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez has filed a report with the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office. For now, he says he\u2019s thankful no one got hurt.<\/p>\n
“Hopefully they get caught and they are, they are held accountable for their actions,” he said.<\/p>\n
