The facility will produce up to 50 million gallons of treated water per day, according to the city’s webpage.

The treatment center, which opened Oct. 15, was designed to strengthen the reliability of Fort Lauderdale’s drinking water system and provide greater flexibility with regard to evolving water quality standards and new contaminants, per the city. It’s also engineered to withstand Category 5 hurricane-force winds, which can reach 157 mph or higher.

The treatment center is being delivered through a public-private partnership between the City of Fort Lauderdale, IDE Technologies, Ridgewood Infrastructure and Kiewit Water Facilities Florida, according to the Oct. 15 announcement. Kiewit was picked to design and build the structure in 2023, the builder announced at the time.

The Prospect Lake facility will replace the city’s prior Fiveash Regional Water Treatment Plant, according to the city. The Fiveash plant, originally built in 1953, was not designed to meet current hurricane wind-resistance standards and would have required significant upgrades to address emerging contaminants.

The city began transferring water from the new facility into the distribution system in

September, according to the announcement. That transition will continue gradually as the new plant is brought fully online and Fiveash moves from a treatment facility to a storage and distribution center.

“This is a transformational investment in the future of Fort Lauderdale,” Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said in the announcement. “We knew it was time to build a water system capable of meeting the needs of a growing city for decades to come.”

Indeed, other municipalities across the country are gearing up to upgrade their own water infrastructure as new issues plague legacy water systems, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2025 Infrastructure Report Card. The grades, which occur every four years, were stark — drinking water infrastructure received a “C-” while wastewater received a “D+” and stormwater received a “D”, the lowest awarded grade, tied with transit.

This story was originally published on Construction Dive.
