Residents in Cape Coral have raised concerns about political signs featuring empty surveillance camera housings, which were placed around the city as part of a campaign tactic. <\/p>\n

The nonprofit group Take Out The Trash Committee of Cape Coral Inc. added the empty camera housings to their political signs to draw attention to their messaging. Cape Coral District 1 candidate Dave Newton has openly supported license plate-reading cameras, stating they can assist police officers. <\/p>\n

District 6 candidate Liza King, however, opposes the use of such cameras. “I tend to agree with the sentiments that I’ve heard as I’ve been meeting voters, and that is that we absolutely need guardrails. So I think that the chief of police has made an excellent decision to remove all of the Flock cameras,” King said. <\/p>\n

The signs, which are positioned with the housings pointed toward the roadway, can be spotted at about 12 locations across Cape Coral. Social media posts from residents have questioned whether the cameras are functional. <\/p>\n

King said she has heard from many concerned voters. “I’ve received a lot of feedback from residents who are concerned as to what’s up with the camera and why it’s there and what the intention is,” she said. <\/p>\n

Take Out The Trash Committee of Cape Coral Inc. confirmed to Gulf Coast News that the housings are empty, and no cameras are collecting data.<\/p>\n

Some voters shared their thoughts on the matter. “It shouldn’t be used to get an edge or not an edge, you know, in the campaigns,” said Vince LaFata of Southwest Cape Coral. Russ Walker, also from Southwest Cape Coral, added, “I just, I’m not a fan of those cameras.” <\/p>\n

Attempts to reach Dave Newton for comment have been unsuccessful. For now, residents can take comfort in knowing the signs do not contain actual cameras.<\/p>\n
