Cape Coral residents are weighing in on plans to build a second hospital in the area, which aims to address long-standing emergency room wait times. <\/p>\n

“I love the idea of having a new hospital in the area,” Chatina Sheets said. “The times that you wait in the waiting rooms and things like that, this is going to be a great thing for our area.” <\/p>\n

In August, HCA Florida and Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter announced plans to construct a second hospital. The new facility will expand on HCA’s current emergency facility located on SW Pine Island Road, while the existing hospital, operated by Lee Health, is located on Del Prado Boulevard South. Phase one of the new hospital will include 100 care beds. <\/p>\n

“Sometimes it does get a little crowded at the Cape. Getting a Del Prado, having another location is even better,” said Cape Coral resident Jason Pawloski. <\/p>\n

Cape Coral is offering HCA more than $30 million in incentives to build the hospital, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions among residents. <\/p>\n

“So it’s a little difficult for me to put my head around us giving another $30 million of revenue out of the taxpayers’ pockets. There’s got to be a happy medium, you know, and I’m not sure I can agree 100% with that $30 million,” Pawloski said. <\/p>\n

One part of the incentive package works like a refund, allowing the city to return up to $17.9 million of the hospital’s increased property taxes over 25 years. The full package also includes separate incentives for job creation, site development and impact fees.<\/p>\n

The city council approved the plan during Wednesday’s meeting.<\/p>\n
