Fort Lauderdale, FL – Fort Lauderdale officials are considering additional restrictions on downtown nightlife as concerns continue over public safety in the Himmarshee entertainment district.<\/p>\n
City commissioners reviewed proposed changes October 20 that could eliminate Himmarshee’s special entertainment district designation and reduce the hours businesses are permitted to serve alcohol.<\/p>\n
Under the proposal, alcohol sales could end at 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends, replacing the current 4 a.m. cutoff for qualifying establishments.<\/p>\n
However, commissioners tabled the proposed ordinance, meaning the changes have not received final approval.<\/p>\n
Himmarshee, centered around Southwest Second Street, includes numerous restaurants, bars and nightlife businesses.<\/p>\n
City officials have cited concerns involving fights, underage drinking, large crowds and shootings in the district.<\/p>\n
Fort Lauderdale Police Chief William Schultz previously outlined increased enforcement efforts, including additional patrols, K-9 units and mounted officers during nighttime hours.<\/p>\n
Authorities have also implemented barricades and improved lighting in the area.<\/p>\n
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan reported increased emergency calls between midnight and 4 a.m., including incidents involving unconscious individuals.<\/p>\n
Officials said approximately 30% of those calls involved people ages 18 to 24.<\/p>\n
The safety concerns follow several violent incidents, including a December 2025 shooting that injured five people near Southwest Second Street and Southwest Third Avenue.<\/p>\n
Commissioners previously approved restrictions on outdoor alcohol sales and open-container consumption in designated entertainment districts.<\/p>\n
Additional proposals include enhanced security requirements, employee training, identification checks and property maintenance standards.<\/p>\n
