PETERSBURG, Fla. &#8211; The nation\u2019s longest-running Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade will keep its city funding for 2025, but concerns about state scrutiny loomed large during Thursday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/pinellas\/st-petersburg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">St. Petersburg<\/a> City Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Big picture view:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Council members voted to maintain the parade\u2019s $230,000 budget \u2013 $150,000 for parade operations and $80,000 for a marquee band.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/st-pete-city-council-discuss-economic-impact-rays-leave-after-2028-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Pete City Council to discuss economic impact if Rays leave after 2028 season<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The conversation was tied to a contract for a new parade organizer, but it comes at a time when the Florida Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is preparing to audit the city\u2019s finances next week.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Local perspective:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">For many residents, the parade is a treasured tradition honoring Dr. King\u2019s legacy. St. Pete resident Amber Woods said her family rarely misses it.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;I have five girls. Trevor Mallory, a previous organizer of the parade, voiced concern that the parade\u2019s cultural significance could be undermined.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;With all of our African American history already under attack, that scares me,&#8221; Mallory said.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mlk-parade.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">This year\u2019s budget includes $80,000 to bring in a marquee marching band, covering transportation, lodging and meals. Last year, Florida A&amp;M University\u2019s band performed, but its costs were paid from a separate budget line.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Council Member Gina Driscoll questioned the expense given tight budget conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/crews-install-aquafence-around-st-petes-most-critical-lift-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crews install AquaFence around St. Pete\u2019s most critical lift station<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;In a difficult year, you have to ask difficult questions,&#8221; Driscoll said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Others, like Council Member Brandi Gabbard, pushed back, saying the band brings excellence, tourism and economic benefit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;It\u2019s one of the longest [parades] in the nation, and we are going to sit here and nitpick it? When there is no increase in funding?&#8221; Gabbard said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Council Member Deborah Figgs-Sanders urged her colleagues not to let the audit intimidate them.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;I know we are looking at DOGE, but I don\u2019t want us to operate in fear and I don\u2019t want us to feel as though we can\u2019t continue to support a legend,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What we don&#8217;t know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">City officials have not yet provided an estimate of the parade\u2019s economic impact.
