STUART – Madison Isler, 20, didn’t even stop to think when she spotted an object lying at the bottom of the apartment complex pool, she said.

“I didn’t feel anything. It was an adrenaline rush,” she said of her diving into the water to pull 3-year-old Luna Hernandez from the pool.

At first, Isler thought it was a smudge on her sunglasses, but when she took off her sunglasses, she realized that there was someone at the bottom of the pool, she said.

Isler, along with a pediatric intensive care unit nurse, immediately began performing CPR on the little girl until Martin County Fire-Rescue arrived and transported the girl to the hospital.

Isler was so relieved when the youngster came to and began breathing on her own, Isler said. By the time the little girl was at the hospital, she was alert and responsive, fire-rescue officials said.

“Afterwards, I felt great because she was OK,” Isler said.

Isler’s successful rescue garnered her the first Heroic Heart Award by MCFR, conferred on her by Chief Chad Cianciulli at a ceremony at Fire-Rescue headquarters on Oct. 19.

“This is such an incredible story to share,” Cianciulli said. “Because of the actions of one young woman who happened to be at the right place at the right time, Luna was given another chance. A chance to go home, a chance to grow up, a chance to make memories with her family. A chance to live a life that she was waiting for. Madison is an incredible young woman.”

With Isler at the ceremony was her parents, Jupiter residents Neil and Kathy Isler; Luna’s mother, Kristine Hernandez; and a very shy Luna, who buried her face most of the time, either in Isler’s shoulders or her mother’s.

Fire-Rescue also planned to honor Isler at the Oct. 27 Martin County Commission meeting, Cianciulli noted.

The incident happened Aug. 23 at the Mason Stuart apartments, north of Salerno Road. Luna was being looked after by a nanny who had momentarily stepped away with other charges to a nearby bathroom, Kristine Hernandez said.

Hernandez, a registered nurse, was in Connecticut on business when the nanny Face-timed her about the incident, she said.

“I was shocked,” Hernandez said. “But I was so grateful that she was OK.”

Isler, a babysitter in the community, learned CPR techniques from her parents, both of whom have been employed by Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue. Neil Isler works out of the Lake Worth station while Kathy is retired.

“Her dad and I both taught her CPR,” Kathy Isler said. “It was one of the things she thought made her more effective as a babysitter.”

And because of this incident, Hernandez is making sure that her daughter knows how to swim, she said.

[12
326,171,173,172
post-436352","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-port-st-lucie","tag-martin","tag-port-st-lucie","tag-port-st-lucie-headlines","tag-port-st-lucie-news
["GET
