Universal Orlando Resort is shuttering nine attractions across all four of its theme parks over the next several months — a wave of closures that includes the permanent end of a decades-long fan-favorite show and the seasonal shutdown of an entire water park just days from now.

The scope is not routine. Universal is simultaneously retooling Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, and Volcano Bay as it repositions the resort following the May 2025 opening of Epic Universe — its largest expansion in more than 25 years. Visitors planning trips anytime between now and spring 2027 should check Universal’s official park hours and refurbishment calendar before finalizing any booking: they are arriving at a resort actively in transition.

Animal Actors on Location Will Permanently Close Nov. 3, 2026

The most significant departure on the list is Animal Actors on Location at Universal Studios Florida, which will give its final performances on November 2 before shutting permanently on November 3, 2026. The live show — which has run since Universal Studios Florida opened — used trained dogs, cats, birds, and other animals to demonstrate how animal performers work in Hollywood film and television.

Universal has not disclosed what will occupy the space, stating the closure will “make way for a new experience.” The closure marks another step away from the park’s original “working studio” identity, following the August 2026 permanent shutdown of Fast & Furious: Supercharged. Guests who want to see Animal Actors for the last time have fewer than two weeks to visit.

Volcano Bay Shuts Down Oct. 26 and Won’t Reopen Until Spring 2027

Universal’s water park, Volcano Bay, begins a full-property seasonal maintenance closure on October 26, 2026 — in three days. According to Universal’s official Volcano Bay maintenance announcement, the park plans to reopen on or before April 1, 2027.

That is a roughly five-month window in which Volcano Bay’s entire lineup — including the Krakatau Aqua Coaster, Ko’okiri Body Plunge, and all pools and water slides — will be unavailable. Families who built winter vacations around the water park should plan accordingly. The closure covers Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and the Presidents Day travel window.

Universal describes the closure as a maintenance period; specific projects planned during the downtime have not been publicly disclosed.

Hogwarts Express Closes Nov. 4 — and the Impact Hits Two Parks

Harry Potter fans planning a November trip should note that the Hogwarts Express will be closed on November 4, 2026, per Universal’s official calendar. The attraction is currently listed to reopen November 5.

A one-day closure sounds minor, but Hogwarts Express is not simply a ride: it is the physical link between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure for guests with park-to-park tickets. When the train is down, travelers who want to move between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade must walk the longer route between the two parks’ main entrances, and the immersive experience of boarding at King’s Cross or Hogsmeade Station is unavailable entirely.

When Does Jurassic Park River Adventure Reopen? The Date Is in Dispute.

Jurassic Park River Adventure at Islands of Adventure has been closed since January 5, 2026, making it one of the year’s longest-running refurbishments. The official Universal Orlando calendar has historically listed the reopening as November 19, 2026, but multiple consumer planning sources — including Undercover Tourist and InsideTheMagic — now reference a December 17, 2026 reopening.

Universal has not publicly clarified the discrepancy. Guests planning late November or holiday trips who are counting on the ride should check the official calendar at universalorlando.com close to their travel dates before finalizing plans. A reopening in mid-December, if confirmed, would bring the total downtime to more than 11 months.

What Rides Are Closed at Universal Orlando in January and February 2027?

Three more closures are confirmed on the official Universal calendar for the first weeks of 2027:

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges at Islands of Adventure’s Toon Lagoon will close January 4 and is scheduled to reopen February 2, 2027. The raft ride’s brief winter downtime follows a pattern: it is a water attraction, and January is among the slowest months for that category in Central Florida.

Fyre Drill in Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk closes January 25 and is expected to reopen February 4, 2027. The interactive boat attraction — one of Isle of Berk’s more family-focused experiences — is getting a routine early maintenance window despite Epic Universe having opened less than two years ago.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Islands of Adventure will close February 8 and reopen February 19, 2027. The Hogwarts Castle-based ride is one of The Wizarding World’s centerpiece attractions; its 11-day closure does not overlap with the Hogwarts Express outage in November, but together they signal that both of IOA’s major Harry Potter rides are scheduled for downtime at different points in the coming months.

Two Universal Studios Florida Experiences Have Already Been Dark for Months

Several closures at Universal Studios Florida are already underway and have been since earlier in 2026:

Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show has been closed since May 12, 2026, as part of a major reimagining — the show will return as Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse, per Universal Orlando’s official October 9 announcement, though no specific reopening date has been given beyond “winter 2026.”

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill in the New York section of the park has also been closed since January 12, 2026, with a return expected sometime in winter 2026. No exact date has been announced. The Irish pub-style restaurant has been one of the park’s more popular sit-down dining options; its closure has reduced full-service dining choices at Universal Studios Florida.

Nine Closures at Once Signal a Resort Mid-Renovation, Not Routine Maintenance

Looking at the nine closures as a group, the pattern is clear. Universal Orlando’s current wave of shutdowns stretches across all four parks simultaneously and includes the permanent retirement of longtime attractions alongside standard seasonal maintenance. This is not coincidental scheduling.

Universal opened Epic Universe in May 2025 as the largest addition to the resort since Islands of Adventure debuted in 1999. That investment is reshaping the entire destination: Islands of Adventure is permanently retiring its original Lost Continent land in phases throughout 2026 and 2027, and the beloved Mythos Restaurant — widely regarded as one of the finest dining experiences in any theme park — is confirmed to close permanently in 2027.
