{"id":437961,"date":"2026-10-26T03:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T03:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/437961\/"},"modified":"2026-10-26T03:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T03:10:09","slug":"late-dwight-wells-honored-with-designated-annual-screamer-day-following-suspect-arrest-wsvn-7news-miami-news-weather-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/437961\/","title":{"rendered":"Late Dwight Wells honored with designated annual \u2018Screamer Day\u2019 following suspect arrest &#8211; WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MIAMI (WSVN) &#8211; Oct. 25 has officially been declared as \u201cScreamer Day\u201d in honor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/community-activist-dwight-wells-killed-in-liberty-city-shooting\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/community-activist-dwight-wells-killed-in-liberty-city-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">late South Florida activist<\/a>, Dwight Wells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wells\u2019 family affectionately gave him that nickname\u2014Screamer\u2014when he was three months old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was extraordinary, he was kind, he was helping,\u201d said Mary Brown, Wells\u2019 mother. \u201cHe loved children, he love children even when he was little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wells founded the \u201cBikes Up, Guns Down\u201d movement aimed at reducing gun violence by focusing youths\u2019 energy into biking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was a caring, loving person,\u201d said Trawonna Barron, Wells\u2019 sister. \u201cHe cared about the kids, the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wells\u2019 legacy getting honored with its own day was proclaimed in advance of a community event at Charles Hadley Park in Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means so much to me, I am so proud of my son,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI mean, I am delivered from so many things through this event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declaration follows the recent arrest of 39-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/jamar-jenkins-arrested-dwight-wells-murder\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/jamar-jenkins-arrested-dwight-wells-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jamar Jenkins<\/a> by the US Marshals for the fatal shooting of Wells in Oct. 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wells\u2019 family chose to have Sunday to be a chance to look forward, gathering at the park to celebrate justice and cementing who Wells was: a peaceful community leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA very important man amongst us,\u201d said Brown. \u201cIt was a leader amongst us, it made my whole family feel so good. I wish I would have brought the population picture, but thank god, I know this was something great for us.
