{"id":44074,"date":"2025-11-12T18:46:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T18:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/44074\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T18:46:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T18:46:08","slug":"florida-boy-died-of-potassium-overdose-after-getting-10x-his-prescription-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/44074\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida boy died of potassium overdose after getting 10x his prescription: suit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0A 2-year-old boy died in a Florida hospital after a doctor negligently deleted a decimal point in his prescription, resulting in the underweight toddler receiving 10 times the dosage of medicine he should have, a lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n<p>De\u2019Markus Page \u201ctragically overdosed with potassium\u201d on March 3, 2024, causing him to suffer a massive brain injury and forcing him to spend the next two weeks enduring \u201ca horrific and protracted hospital course\u201d on a ventilator before finally being taken off of life support, according to a lawsuit filed by his mother last week.<\/p>\n<p>Mom Dominique Page is suing University of Florida Health and its Shands Teaching Hospital and Clinics, as well as the medical staff she claims \u201cfumbled\u201d his treatment, including taking 20 minutes to intubate him after he went into cardiac arrest, the Alachua County Circuit Court lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.79785156;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37647070\" width=\"471\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hospital-staff-killed-2-year-115272676.jpg\" alt=\"De'Markus Page\" class=\"wp-image-37647070\"  \/>De\u2019Markus Page, 2, died in a Florida hospital after he overdosed from potassium that was prescribed to him at 10 times the dose it should have been, according to a lawsuit. J Brown Funeral and Cremation Services<\/p>\n<p>De\u2019Markus \u2014 who \u201cwas suspected of having some level of autism\u201d and was a picky eater \u2014 first landed in AdventHealth Ocala Hospital on March 1, 2024 with a virus and dangerously low levels of potassium, Law &amp; Crime <a href=\"https:\/\/lawandcrime.com\/lawsuit\/hospital-staff-killed-2-year-old-after-deleting-a-critical-decimal-point-from-medicine-dosage-levels-making-them-10-times-higher-than-ordered-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first reported<\/a>, citing the suit.<\/p>\n<p>He was given intravenous fluids to help with his low electrolyte levels and the next morning transferred to Shands Teaching Hospital and Clinics in Gainsville, Fla. \u201cin order to receive the higher level of care he required,\u201d the suit claims.<\/p>\n<p>Shands medical staff found De\u2019Markus weighed just 21 pounds \u2014 or the 30th percentile of weight for his demographic \u2014 and he still had low levels of potassium, the court papers explain.<\/p>\n<p>So the boy was given \u201celectrolyte replacement therapy,\u201d but the next day Dr. Jiabi Chen \u201cunconscionably\u201d ordered the boy be given \u201c10 times the level ordered the previous day,\u201d which had \u201cbeen calculated based on his size, weight, and that day\u2019s lab results,\u201d the filing alleges.<\/p>\n<p>Chen \u201cerrantly\u201d ordered the extremely high dosage, \u201cdeleting a critical decimal point in the prior day\u2019s dosage of 1.5 mmol \u2014 now ordering the liquid supplement to be given at 15 mmol twice a day,\u201d the suit claims. <\/p>\n<p>This, on top of the two other forms of potassium De\u2019Markus was already receiving through IV and Pedialyte, the filing charges.<\/p>\n<p>No one else on the medical team, nor the pharmacists, caught the error \u201cdespite a Red Flag warning in the hospital\u2019s pharmacy system that alerted them to the excessive dosage,\u201d the court documents claim.<\/p>\n<p>So the toddler received two of the excessive dosages, the last being administered at 8:28 p.m. on March 3, 2024, the suit alleges. And by 9:02 p.m., he went into cardiac arrest caused by the overdose \u2014 or hyperkalemic cardiac arrest, the suit alleges.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37647069\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/uf-health-shands-childrens-hospital-115272675.jpg\" alt=\"University of Florida Health, Shands Children's Hospital\" class=\"wp-image-37647069\"  \/>De\u2019Markus Page was brought to the University of Florida Health, Shands Children Hospital where medical staff botched his treatment, according to a suit. Google Maps<\/p>\n<p>But the staff bungled their response and carried out \u201c2 to 3 botched attempts\u201d to intubate De\u2019Markus, the court documents claim. And \u201cthere was at least twenty minutes that had passed since the Code [Blue] was called, during which time he remained severely deprived of the oxygen necessary to sustain life,\u201d the suit alleges.<\/p>\n<p>De\u2019Markus\u2019 heart eventually spontaneously come back, \u201cbut the anoxic damage already done to his brain and other vital organs was catastrophic,\u201d the suit says.<\/p>\n<p>When his blood was drawn they found elevated potassium and phosphate, the filing claims.<\/p>\n<p>De\u2019Markus was kept alive for the next two weeks while enduring seizures and battling \u201cmyriad of ICU-related complications,\u201d before he was taken off of life support on March 18, 2024, the filing charges.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Dominique \u2014 of Marion County, Fla. \u2014 is suing Shands and University of Florida for at least $50,000 under wrongful death claims and related claims for the pain her son suffered and for her loss of \u201ccompanionship of her minor child and for mental pain and suffering,\u201d she endured.<\/p>\n<p>The Page family lawyer, Jordan Dulcie, called the hospital and its doctors\u2019 actions \u201cgrossly negligent\u201d and said they \u201cfailed the basic standards of medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo parent should have to lose a child like this,\u201d the lawyer continued. \u201cWhat the family has endured is unimaginable and the worst part is that it was entirely preventable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer said he hopes to bring the case to trial to prevent another family from having to go through what Dominique went through.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital declined to comment on the case but said: \u201cUF Health is committed to protecting the privacy of all patients and their families and follows all state and federal HIPAA regulations.
