It’ll be the retailer’s first warehouse in the city.

The store is planned for 600 Chiquita Blvd. S. and would include an approximately 165,000-square-foot warehouse and a members-only gas station, the city announced Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The Cape Coral City Council is expected to evaluate an incentive package during its meeting Nov. 2 that could provide up to $10 million toward site development and impact fees.

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn credited municipal economic development staff for securing the deal and noted that another warehouse club has long been a top request among local residents.

“We’re grateful Costco has chosen Cape Coral, and I want to thank our Economic Development staff for their work to bring this project to fruition,” said Ilczyszyn. “A Costco has been one of our residents’ most requested additions, and we’re pleased to help make it a reality. Beyond providing a shopping destination closer to home, this investment will bring much-needed jobs to our community and give residents an alternative to traveling to Fort Myers to shop at Costco.”

No more crossing the river for Costco

For years, Cape Coral residents have asked when Costco might open a location in the city, rather than shoppers making the trek across the Caloosahatchee River into Fort Myers to shop at Costco locations on Cypress Lake Drive or at Gulf Coast Town Center.

Local shoppers have long asked The News-Press’ In the Know columnist Phil Fernandez when Costco might open in Cape Coral.

“Costco would be great. I’m thinking about giving up my membership, because I just don’t manage to get there much anymore,” Cape Coral resident Patricia Gilbert said. “Having one closer would change my mind.”

Another resident, Megan McDaniel, wrote on Facebook, “Just moved from Fort Myers to the Cape, and that’s the one thing I miss.”

Finding enough land for large commercial projects has historically been a challenge in Cape Coral, which was largely developed around pre-platted residential lots. However, as the city’s population surged past 230,000 residents, the expanding consumer base made Cape Coral an increasingly attractive market for major retailers.

Where will the new Costco be in Cape Coral?

The store is planned for 600 Chiquita Blvd. S. in Cape Coral, at the northwest corner of Pine Island Road and Chiquita. It will be just a little east of the a new $700 million town center called Cape Coral Grove planned between Chiquita Boulevard and Burnt Store Road.

When will the new Costco open to the public?

An official opening date for the 600 Chiquita Boulevard S. location has not been announced. The city indicated that the opening schedule will depend on Costco’s construction timeline.

Once physical warehouse construction begins, it takes 110 days (roughly 3.5 to 4 months) to build and open a new Costco store. According to Costco’s longtime architects at MG2, this highly streamlined timeline is achieved through an efficient, standardized assembly process that acts much like a pre-engineered prefab/modular system.

Where else is Costco expanding in Southwest Florida?

The Cape Coral store is part of a broader expansion across Southwest Florida.

In Collier County, work is underway on a second warehouse store at Rattlesnake Hammock Road and Collier Boulevard in East Naples. Meanwhile, in Fort Myers, Costco acquired a 55-acre property at Colonial Boulevard and Plantation Road to build a larger store intended to replace its existing location on Cypress Lake Drive.

Mickenzie Hannon is a watchdog reporter for The News-Press and Naples Daily News, covering Collier and Lee counties.
