STUART, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 A wrong-way pursuit on U.S. 1 ended in a serious crash early Tuesday morning after a driver accused of fleeing Stuart police drove into oncoming traffic, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The driver, a 15-year-old juvenile, and the other motorist were both seriously injured in the crash, which happened around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Stuart Police Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n Officers say they were conducting traffic enforcement near Southwest Federal Highway and Southwest St. Lucie Crescent when they spotted a vehicle traveling north at an extremely high rate of speed, police said.<\/p>\n See also: $30M Florida drug bust exposes cartel cocaine pipeline stretching from Mexico to Tampa Bay<\/a><\/p>\n An officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and sped away, prompting a pursuit.<\/p>\n The chase eventually continued onto U.S. 1, where the driver began traveling north in the southbound lanes from Wright Boulevard, according to police.<\/p>\n Officers continued trying to stop the vehicle and attempted to alert other motorists to the danger. The driver continued traveling the wrong way before crashing into a vehicle heading south on Northwest Federal Highway near the Mall South Entrance intersection, police said.<\/p>\n Both drivers were taken to Lawnwood Medical Center<\/a> in Fort Pierce with serious injuries.<\/p>\n
