What started as a routine check turned into a buzzing surprise.

“It’s something that doesn’t happen every day. It’s not often you get bees invading your spaces at work,” said Duncan Amesbury.

After traveling, Amesbury returned and checked on his pontoon boat in Cape Coral, only to find hundreds of honeybees clustered around the steering wheel and ignition.

“In the back of my mind, I was thinking, oh, free honey. Then I decided I need to take pictures and seek professional help,” said Amesbury.

That’s when Amesbury turned to Facebook, in hopes of finding a safe way to remove his unexpected visitors.

“I went with the removal services because they offered to humanely remove the bees and remove the hive. The pest control people, they were just going to kill the bees and not even remove the honeycomb,” said Amesbury.

Amesbury reached out to several bee removal companies to figure out the safest way to handle this situation. He’s since hired a company to remove the colony.

“Bees are important to nature. They do a good job pollinating, and that byproduct that they make, honey, is one of my favorite things to have. So, I wasn’t keen on killing them,” said Amesbury.

Until a removal company can safely remove the bees, Amesbury has been advised to keep the cover on the boat to help contain them.
