Brazilian Sen. Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro and his \u200bfamily arrived in Miami on Wednesday, where the United States government will grant them entry visas<\/a> after he refused to comply with a Brazilian Supreme Court order to surrender his passports.<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro, who lost Sunday\u2019s presidential election<\/a> to leftist incumbent \u2060Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, left Brazil under a shroud of secrecy after the court order, which relates to a money-laundering investigation in which he denies wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Reuters TV images showed Bolsonaro, his wife and two daughters disembarking from the Gulfstream G400 and heading into Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.<\/p>\n

Their \u2060journey to the United States captured attention \u200bacross the \u2060region. They entered northern Argentina late on Tuesday evening, according to the country\u2019s migration department, and then took a private jet to the Ecuadorian city \u2060of Guayaquil. From there, they flew to Miami.<\/p>\n

Neither Argentina\u2019s presidency, Ecuadorian ministries nor Baires \u200bFly, the \u2060operator of the private jet, \u200cresponded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro thanked Argentine leader Javier Milei for helping him make the journey and U.S. President Donald Trump, who granted him and his family entry visas, for welcoming him.<\/p>\n

In an initial open letter posted on X, Bolsonaro declared himself \u201cthe elected president.\u201d He then deleted that version and updated it with another letter in which he said he was the rightful \u201cleader\u201d of Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to say, not only to my 60 million voters but to the Brazilian people, that I am the leader and that the criminals who stole Brazil\u2019s election are part of a criminal organization that has established a tyranny,\u201d he said in the updated version.<\/p>\n

Lula\u2019s victory has been recognized by Brazil\u2019s federal electoral court, global leaders, international observers and Bolsonaro\u2019s own party.<\/p>\n

Lula condemns departure<\/p>\n

\u201cI regret that he left Brazil, because he could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true,\u201d Lula told supporters Wednesday. \u201cThis act of leaving Brazil is shameful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paulo Figueiredo, a close Bolsonaro ally who lives in the U.S., said in a short statement he couldn\u2019t confirm information from foreign authorities but that \u201cFl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro is well, in security and resting with his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro\u2019s campaign manager, Rog\u00e9rio Marinho, earlier said he hadn\u2019t spoken to the defeated candidate since early Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no news from Fl\u00e1vio or his lawyers about what happened,\u201d Marinho said. \u201cI received a text message from him. He said he wanted to take a break and then he would talk to us. That\u2019s the only message I had from him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brazilian media reported many Bolsonaro allies were unable to reach him.<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro\u2019s departure threatens to deepen a rift between the two most populous nations in the Americas.<\/p>\n

Lula has accused Washington of colluding with \u200cthe Bolsonaro family to help return them to power. \u200cAhead of Sunday\u2019s election, Reuters reported on a State Department campaign to restore the Bolsonaros to office.<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he would approve of Bolsonaro coming to the United States, after his State Department \u2060said it would give them entry visas.<\/p>\n

Trump has previously alleged that Fl\u00e1vio\u2019s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, was a victim of judicial persecution in Brazil.<\/p>\n

Jair Bolsonaro also traveled to the United States after refusing to concede defeat to Lula in 2022, during Joe Biden\u2019s presidency. He eventually returned to Brazil but was later sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup after supporters stormed government buildings in Bras\u00edlia.<\/p>\n

Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro had \u200cbeen widely expected to win Sunday\u2019s election but suffered a shock defeat.<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro, \u200bwho loses his immunity from prosecution when his Senate term ends in \u200cFebruary, had said on Monday after \u2060the order to hand in his passports that he had no plans to \u2060flee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never thought about leaving the country,\u201d he said. \u201cI will hand over my passports and \u200cdefend myself against this travesty, \u200bwhich is a clear attempt to intimidate \u200cme.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brazilian Sen.
