STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — The rebuild of Murray Middle School is underway, nearly two years after a tornado spawned by Hurricane Milton destroyed two campus buildings and damaged a third.

The Martin County School District held a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for the project at the Stuart school. The EF-1 tornado struck on Oct. 9, 2024, damaging spaces used by the school’s band, chorus, and agricultural programs.

Plans call for replacing Buildings 9, 10, and 18 and building a new administration and media center. The campus will also get modern classrooms and specialized spaces for art, band, chorus, and agricultural science.

The project includes renovations to the existing gym, campus site improvements, and an upgraded chiller plant. Construction areas are being kept separate from student areas so the school can remain open during the work.

The district’s director of facilities and planning Mark Sechrist explained the significance of the project:

This project is about more than replacing facilities. It is an opportunity to provide students and staff with modern, safe, and engaging learning environments that will support education and community programs for years to come.”

Demolition began in July 2026 with the removal of Buildings 10 and 18. The gym renovation is expected to be completed by August 2027. The new administration building, media center, and specialized classroom spaces are scheduled for completion in December 2027.

The project is funded through state support, insurance reimbursements, and district capital funds. Hedrick Brothers Construction is serving as construction manager.

STUART, Fla.
