{"id":441506,"date":"2026-10-29T14:05:06","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T14:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/441506\/"},"modified":"2026-10-29T14:05:06","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T14:05:06","slug":"2nd-suspect-charged-in-deadly-motel-shooting-in-may-jso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/441506\/","title":{"rendered":"2nd suspect charged in deadly motel shooting in May: JSO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 A second man has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a Jacksonville motel in May that left a 40-year-old man dead, according to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office said Dequan McDonald, 21, has been charged as the second gunman in the death of Giavonathan Butler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The JSO SWAT Team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/02\/jacksonville-man-charged-with-motel-murder-after-telling-witness-he-was-tired-of-people-trying-him-jso-report-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/02\/jacksonville-man-charged-with-motel-murder-after-telling-witness-he-was-tired-of-people-trying-him-jso-report-reveals\/\">previously took 25-year-old Alfred Jones III into custody<\/a> two days after the May 29 deadly shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">But JSO said that evidence at the Golfair Boulevard motel room scene proved Jones did not act alone, and the investigation into the case continued, eventually leading detectives to McDonald as the second gunman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">In July, McDonald was arrested in connection with a string of vehicle burglaries and thefts in the Cobblestone area. He has been in the Duval County jail since then, awaiting trial for those charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Homicide detectives received a warrant Wednesday for McDonald\u2019s arrest in Butler\u2019s murder. He continues to be held in the Duval County jail.<\/p>\n<p>What led to the shooting?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">According to Jones\u2019 arrest affidavit, a witness told detectives that Jones and Butler were arguing earlier that day. The witness said Butler told Jones to move away from his door, which angered Jones.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\"  loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" role=\"presentation\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/BEZEP52OIVFE7IGV2J7XPBDEKQ.jpg\"\/>Booking photo of Alfred Jones III (WJXT)<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The witness said that after the dispute, Jones told her that he was tired of people \u201ctrying\u201d him. The witness also told investigators that Jones asked several people to check on who was inside Butler\u2019s room before he and another man went in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Jones then allegedly ran off through a back door, jumped a fence and ran toward Golfair Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Detectives canvassing the direction in which Jones ran found a magazine containing six live 9mm rounds near a fence.
