Red Bull Flugtag is landing in Miami this Halloween, and \u201clanding\u201d is being generous; more like splashing and crashing! Local teams are designing and building whatever they can to actually make it as far out into Biscayne Bay as possible.<\/p>\n
Red Bull Flugtag is one of the silliest competitions around. But you shouldn\u2019t take it that seriously because even the people participating are not, even if they make it 10 feet, 100, or 200 \u2014 the results are always hilarious and fun.<\/p>\n
The 305 is taking flight this Halloween at Red Bull Flugtag Miami.<\/p>\n
Daniel Figueredo: \u201cThis is just going to be a spectacular show of people crashing into the water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hosted by Miami personality Mr. Red.<\/p>\n
Mr. Red: \u201cSome of them do fly. They go the distance. Most of them fall, but guaranteed all of them will splash.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thirty teams. A 30-foot ramp, and three ways to impress the judges: Flight distance, creativity, and showmanship.<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cNot only are you competing, but there\u2019s a little bit of a show element to it too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Felix Fraile: \u201cOh yeah! We\u2019re dancing actually to \u2018Damn, I love Miami\u2019 by Pitbull. We\u2019re all dressed like Pitbull. We got bald caps, and we got like fake suits and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel Figueredo: \u201cWe\u2019re gonna be going out with our guayaberas. We\u2019re gonna be having our little, you know, Panama hats, probably some fake cigars.<\/p>\n
Sanguich restaurants and the \u2018A Day in Miami\u2019 podcast are joining forces with the Cuban flyer.<\/p>\n
Daniel Figueredo: \u201cIt definitely is the first world\u2019s flying sandwich, but I think it would definitely be the world\u2019s largest Cuban sandwich.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, FIU engineering students are about to school the rest as team IEEE.<\/p>\n
Group: \u201cI-triple-e.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cI\u2019m picturing this, and of course I\u2019m not an engineer. I told you my dad is. So do you need like a lot of wind for this to work or what?\u201d<\/p>\n
Felix Fraile: \u201cIt\u2019s very situational. Like, as engineers, we always assume the worst-case scenario because we want to make it as strong as possible. So the purpose is for the air to go like around the wing and not into the wing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Student: \u201cI was actually able to help them make a website. So they could test out the simulators to see how the plane would fly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cAnd are you considering weight?\u201d<\/p>\n
Felix Fraile: \u201cWe\u2019re trying to cut as much weight as possible because, you know, we want this to fly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Student: \u201cThere\u2019s horizontal but also diagonal members, and I think that\u2019s what will give us the advantage. Triangles.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cMath.\u201d<\/p>\n
Student: \u201cMath.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cYeah, it\u2019s like that\u2019s crazy for me. That\u2019s crazy. You guys, you do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Different designs, same destination: Biscayne Bay.<\/p>\n
Student: \u201cThey should vote for us. We\u2019re working hard on this, and we are going to be the winners.<\/p>\n
Eduardo Moya: \u201cI don\u2019t know if we\u2019ll beat the world record, but our local guys, we\u2019re expecting to blow them out of the water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel Figueredo: \u201cOh my god, Eddy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cAnd worst-case scenario, you\u2019ll definitely win the dance, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
Felix Fraile: \u201cI mean, yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n
It all goes down this Saturday. And by down, I mean the pilots too.<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cYou guys have a towel for him ready to go?\u201d<\/p>\n
Eduardo Moya: \u201cYou\u2019re gonna have a cold, wet\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel Figueredo: \u201cI\u2019m gonna have cold underwear after being dumped in that water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Miranda: \u201cYou guys gonna take care of your boy? This guy here is gonna risk his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel Figueredo: \u201cI\u2019m going to pray on the way down.\u201d<\/p>\n
