Others, though, are looking for a different kind of retirement. For retirees who want outdoorsy adventures, four distinct seasons with glorious fall foliage and snowy winters, and North Atlantic views, Sagadahoc County in Maine beats out Florida any day of the week. Situated along a rugged stretch of Maine’s Midcoast, it has a picturesque rocky coastline, a long fishing history, charming small towns, and a total population of only about 37,000 people.

Niche recently named Sagadahoc County the No. 1 county in Maine to retire in 2026. To give Sagadahoc County its A- grade and top spot on the retirement list, Niche drew from a wealth of quality of life data from official government sources, and its healthcare, cost of living, and abundance of outdoor activities helped catapult it to the top. As for housing, although it only received a B grade, it was nevertheless named by Niche as the best county to buy a house in Maine. For retirees of senior age, the data indicates that 25% of the county is 65 and older. The data also showed that the county is very safe: Violent and property crime statistics are all well below the national average. Retirees should know, though, that the area received mid-level grades in two key areas: diversity and weather. Winters here are very cold and snowy, meaning retirees won’t experience relative year-round warmth like in Florida.

Sagadahoc County, Maine, has charming small towns

Part of what makes Sagadahoc County so appealing for retirees are its many small towns, such as Bath, Phippsburg, and Topsham. With 400 years of maritime history in this area, Maine’s dreamy New England shipbuilding town of Bath offers a historic walkable downtown with parks, Victorian-era buildings, riverside views, shops, restaurants, and galleries. For retirees interested in history or river boat cruises, The Maine Maritime Museum adds to the town’s appeal. The town hosts seasonal activities, like the Bath Farmers’ Market in summertime and Christmas events, like the Old Fashioned Christmas festival.

Another charming town in Sagadahoc County, located not far from Bath, is Phippsburg, one of Maine’s oldest towns. Situated on one of the Midcoast area’s many peninsulas, Phippsburg is a historic beach town positioned between the sea and the Kennebec River and encompasses a large area of the county. Because it’s so widely spread out and has such easy access to nature, Phippsburg is a haven for those who love the outdoors. For example, Popham Beach State Park is highly rated on Google Maps with 4.8 stars. Located on the Androscoggin and Cathance Rivers, this small town is known for outdoor recreation, restaurants, and shopping. It has an industrial vibe, made even more pronounced by The Swinging Bridge, a 19th-century walking bridge with two metal towers and metal rope suspensions. Seasonally, one of the best town events is the Topsham Fair, which celebrates the town’s agricultural roots with rides, music, and fair foods.

Find fresh seafood in Sagadahoc County, Maine

                    James Kirkikis/Shutterstock

Maine’s fishing history dates back 15,000 years to the Wabanaki indigenous people and the modern cod industry that began in the 1600s.
