ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 Florida probation officers will conduct more than 5,000 residential inspections statewide as part of an annual effort to enforce Halloween-related restrictions on sex offenders under felony supervision, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.<\/p>\n

The department is working with law enforcement to ensure people under supervision follow court orders restricting candy distribution, Halloween decorations and trick-or-treater contact.<\/p>\n

\u201cProtecting Florida\u2019s communities remains our highest priority,\u201d FDC Secretary Richard Comerford said in a statement. \u201cThrough proactive enforcement and strong partnerships with state and local law enforcement, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure a safe Halloween for Floridians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Restrictions include no candy or decorations<\/p>\n

According to FDC, Halloween-specific restrictions for sex offenders under supervision include:<\/p>\n

Not giving out candy or other treats.Turning off porch lights and closing blinds.Not displaying outdoor decorations.Not answering the door to trick-or-treaters.Not wearing costumes or masks.Not attending Halloween parties.<\/p>\n

The inspections focus on compliance with the conditions of each offender\u2019s supervision.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur probation officers play a critical role in ensuring offenders comply with the conditions of their supervision,\u201d said Joe Winkler, assistant deputy secretary of community corrections.<\/p>\n

Winkler said the inspections, conducted with law enforcement partners, are intended to reinforce accountability and prevent violations during Halloween.<\/p>\n

Offenders who violate their supervision conditions may face immediate arrest and violation-of-probation proceedings, the department said.<\/p>\n
