TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida State University cut the ribbon on a major milestone for healthcare in Tallahassee with the opening of its new research building. <\/p>\n
FSU says the four-story building puts research, training, and patient care all under one roof. It sits right on the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare campus.<\/p>\n
Local leaders cut the ribbon on the 140,000-square-foot research and collaboration building Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The FSU Board of Trustees voted Friday morning to name the center after Agricultural Commissioner Wilton Simpson.<\/p>\n
FSU said Simpson approved the $125 million for the project when he was senate president.<\/p>\n

FSU President Richard McCullough said the building will spearhead big improvements to local healthcare in the next 10 to 15 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019ll be doing certain lines of services, they call them here, that currently do not happen where people have to travel to other cities far away to get care,\u201d McCullough said. \u201cAnd you\u2019ll be able to do that here.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first floor is home to FSU\u2019s family residency practice. FSU said it will soon serve 12,000 patients a year. <\/p>\n
The second floor will train students in a simulation lab.<\/p>\n
The third and fourth floors are research labs. Scientists will study things like tissue culture and gene editing.<\/p>\n
FSU said the facility is expected to bring in $40 million a year in grants.<\/p>\n
McCullough said researchers will start moving in as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
