TORONTO \u2014 For however long Jalen Suggs<\/a> is out for the Magic<\/a> and Jase Richardson<\/a> starts in the backcourt, the second-year Orlando<\/a> guard is aware he has to make smart decisions on both ends of the floor.<\/p>\n

He also knows he can\u2019t put himself in early foul trouble as he did Wednesday night against the Raptors<\/a>. In the first four minutes of the Eastern Conference matchup at Scotiabank Arena<\/a>, Richardson earned three fouls.<\/p>\n

It kept him off the floor the rest of the first half.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously frustrating getting three fouls early into the game, but I\u2019ve got to be better in my positioning (and) better with my hand placement,\u201d the 6-foot-1 guard told the Orlando Sentinel after shootaround Friday ahead of a road rematch with Toronto<\/a>. \u201cI just got to get out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2025 first-round pick bounced back in the second half by hitting two 3-pointers and scoring all of his 10 points in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

It was just Richardson\u2019s second start of his young NBA career and the eighth time he\u2019s finished a game scoring in double figures.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s looking pretty good,\u201d veteran guard Jevon Carter<\/a> told the Sentinel about Richardson. \u201cIt\u2019s tough to get a gauge on the refs early in the game when you\u2019re starting like that. It\u2019s easier to get a feel for it coming off the bench.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he\u2019s just got to be a little bit more smart with his aggressiveness,\u201d Carter added. \u201cThat\u2019ll help him stay out of foul trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Carter, Richardson receives guidance from Suggs, who suffered a mild right bone bruise last Sunday at New York. Although Suggs traveled home to Orlando to focus on treatment instead of continuing onto Toronto with the team, he\u2019s talked with Richardson and the rest of the team from afar.<\/p>\n

\u201cJalen, he\u2019s telling me a lot,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cThat\u2019s somebody I really talk to, especially playing point guard in this league. (He tells me to) stay composed, don\u2019t let your emotions show when you\u2019re playing. So, (I) just definitely try to go out there with a clear mind and not show too much emotion, but enough to where I have a competitive edge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richardson, 21, had a relatively quiet rookie campaign when he wasn\u2019t asked to do much with the ball in his hands. In 54 regular-season appearances, he averaged 4.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists during 10.9 minutes per night.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s working to make the most out of his starting role and extended playing time without Suggs and Paolo Banchero<\/a> (right low-grade high ankle sprain) available for the Magic.<\/p>\n

After Friday\u2019s NBA Cup contest at Toronto, Orlando returns to Kia Center for the first game of a back-to-back when it hosts the Celtics at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Magic host the Wizards the following night.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a learning curve going from last year to this year,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cBut I definitely just got to make sure I\u2019m taking care of the ball, make sure I\u2019m reducing turnovers, getting the team set and just being a communicator, try to get the guys huddled when stuff starts getting tough.\u201d<\/p>\n
