Jai Lucas\u2019 path to his first head-coaching role didn\u2019t go as he initially imagined. A McDonald\u2019s All-American who started his college career at Florida and finished at Texas, Lucas played professionally for three seasons before moving into coaching \u2014 first at Texas, then Kentucky and finally Duke \u2014 where he quickly built a reputation as a top recruiter. In March, Miami named him its head coach, giving the 36-year-old control of a roster he has already begun to reshape.\u00a0<\/p>\n
If Lucas sounds like he was born for this, it\u2019s because he essentially was.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, for me, it was my family business,\u201d he told ESPN Gainesville\u2019s Sportscene with Steve Russell. \u201cMy dad was a former player and a coach. My brother was a former player. I grew up around the game, it\u2019s one of my first loves.\u201d<\/p>\n
That lineage runs deep. His father, John Lucas II, played and coached in the NBA. His brother, John Lucas III, starred at Oklahoma State before his NBA career and coaching roles. Basketball was always the dinner-table default talk.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The coaching transition for Lucas happened sooner than expected.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe transition was difficult because it occurred at 24,\u201d Lucas said. \u201cEvery college player believes they\u2019ll play forever. When that doesn\u2019t happen, you step back and ask: How can I still be part of the team and the game? For me, that path was coaching.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Texas provided the entry point, Kentucky boosted his profile and Duke refined it \u2014 first as an assistant, then as an associate head coach under Jon Scheyer.<\/p>\n
Why Miami, and why now?<\/p>\n
Lucas combines location, platform and the modern realities of NIL and the portal.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cRecruiting is something I became really good at,\u201d he said. \u201cI got to see a different side of Miami \u2014 the real Miami. With the brand, the location, the recent success, I felt this job has everything you need to be successful in this era.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The fit became even clearer when Jim Larra\u00f1aga stepped down in December 2024, and Miami turned to Lucas in early March.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also credits Duke with shaping his preparedness.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the main reasons I took the job at Duke was working for a first-time head coach later. Those three years, starting and building that program with Coach Scheyer, have been a benefit to me for doing this job now,\u201d Lucas said.<\/p>\n
Eight months in, the early results suggest Lucas\u2019 plan for the Hurricanes: size, speed, defensive commitment and quick portal development.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Miami started with an 86\u201369 win over Jacksonville with a renovated roster. Newcomers Malik Reneau (20 points) and Ernest Udeh Jr. (14 points, 14 rebounds) stole the spotlight, while five-star freshman Shelton Henderson showed big-stage composure.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI like where we are right now \u2026 but I know we\u2019re not where we need to be,\u201d Lucas said of his 3\u20130 start. For Miami\u2019s head coach, progress and patience are key.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For Gator fans, there\u2019s inevitably a nostalgic touch. Lucas came to Gainesville in 2007 as a top-20 point guard, averaged 8.5 points as a freshman, then transferred to Texas \u2014 an early chapter he still talks about fondly.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe University of Florida always has a special place in my heart,\u201d Lucas said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That connection will be front of mind Sunday, when the Gators and Miami meet at Jacksonville\u2019s VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything around the game has changed \u2014 the portal, NIL \u2014 but I feel like we\u2019re heading in the right direction,\u201d Lucas said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
If Miami\u2019s early tone is any indication, Lucas\u2019s mix of recruiter\u2019s instinct and builder\u2019s patience is translating quickly. For one night in Jacksonville, the Gator Nation will\u00a0 get a close look at a familiar face writing his next chapter from the opposing sideline.<\/p>\n
