Make way for the Martins.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Best of Steve Martin & Martin Short\u201d national tour is coming to Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood on Friday, Jan. 15.<\/p>\n
The dynamic duo\u2019s show is a mix of stand-up comedy, character sketches, video montages and bluegrass music (a la Steve Martin\u2019s banjo-brilliant virtuosity and special guests Jeff Babko and Steep Canyon Rangers). There is also a lot of good-natured skewering of each other in the back-and-forth banter, born out of 40-plus years of friendship.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Though they met a few years earlier, Short and Martin\u2019s<\/a> first project together was the 1986 film, \u201cThree Amigos.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2022 They reunited on the silver screen in 1991\u2019s \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d and its 1995 sequel, \u201cFather of the Bride Part II.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2022 In 2018, they had a\u00a0 Netflix comedy special,<\/a> the critically acclaimed \u201cAn Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2022 They\u2019ve been touring together since 2015, when they launched their first live show, \u201cA Very Stupid Conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2022 They\u2019re starring in \u2014 and share producing credits alongside Selena Gomez \u2014 \u201cOnly Murders in the Building,\u201d<\/a> which returns for its sixth season on Dec. 8. The comedic\/murder-mystery Hulu series has included a who\u2019s who of Tinseltown and Broadway, including Meryl Streep, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Sting, Matthew Broderick, Keegan-Michael Key, Shirley MacLaine, Jesse Williams, Tina Fey, Nathan Lane, Andrea Martin, Jane Lynch, Ren\u00e9e Zellweger, Melissa McCarthy and more. Lots more.<\/p>\n Ahead of their Hard Rock show, the two comedy kings did an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel \u2014 Short from Los Angeles, Martin from New York City \u2014 and here is more about the tour from that Q&A session.<\/p>\n Q: If you could, in a non-creepy way, whisper something into the ears of every audience member just before they walk into Hard Rock Live, what would you say?<\/p>\n Martin: I would whisper, \u201cRelax, I think you\u2019re going to enjoy it.\u201d Or I would say, \u2018I\u2019m better than Marty \u2014 you\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n Short: \u201cDoesn\u2019t Marty look better than Steve?\u201d<\/p>\n Q: Do you have some sort of backstage ritual that you do before a live stage performance?<\/p>\n Short: I warm up vocally with a [singing] warmup tape from [1992] because she talks about, \u201cWell, it\u2019s election day and Bill Clinton is going to be president.\u201d<\/p>\n Martin: I actually just try to relax. We rehearse and now we have maybe an hour before a show and I just kind of lie down and try to be zen \u2014 or, what do they call it, bedrotting.<\/p>\n \u201cI started my career in Coconut Grove. Florida would hire me, early on \u2026 So I\u2019m affectionate toward Florida.\u201d \u2014 Steve Martin<\/p>\n Q: What would you like the audience to know about the show\u2019s special guest stars, Jeff Babko and Steep Canyon Rangers?<\/p>\n Short: They\u2019re just phenomenal musicians. I\u2019ve toured with Jeff for over 20 years. And he\u2019s the keyboard guy for [Jimmy] Kimmel\u2019s band, the head of Kimmel\u2019s band. And Steep Canyon Rangers, Steve has toured with them for years.<\/p>\n Martin: Jeff has a great sense of humor. He fits right in. When we\u2019re onstage, there\u2019s something very defined, but offstage there\u2019s something very defined too, which is kind of everybody gets along, has a good time. I started playing with the Steep Canyon Rangers, I think it was maybe 2011, I\u2019m not sure. So we\u2019ve been playing together for 15 years and we\u2019ve released albums. We won a Grammy. They won a Grammy. We wrote songs together. We just have a long history.<\/p>\n Q: Florida has been low-hanging tropical fruit, if you will, for a lot of skewering in comedy. Will any of that make it into your SoFlo performance?<\/p>\n Martin: We tend to not put down the place we\u2019re in until after we leave<\/p>\n Short: We\u2019re wise that way<\/p>\n Martin: No, we love Florida. We had a show in West Palm Beach for a hundred people \u2014 that wasn\u2019t tickets sold, it was a charity event. And we were kind of worried about it, and it was one of our best shows we ever did.<\/p>\n Q: Other than that, what are some of your favorite Sunshine State memories or impressions?<\/p>\n Short: I am always amazed at how beautiful it is. I haven\u2019t spent that much time in Florida, I must admit.<\/p>\n Martin: I started my career in Coconut Grove. There was a little club there called Bubba\u2019s<\/a> and I worked there, you know, and I played for like 40 people. There was a [journalist] there who gave me a great review. And I worked Tallassee a lot for college shows. The Beef & Bottle Club<\/a> [in Gainesville], I played there. I don\u2019t know it it\u2019s still open, probably not. So I have a lot of good memories. Florida would hire me, early on, let\u2019s put it that way. So I\u2019m affectionate toward Florida.<\/p>\n Q: What else can you share with our readers about the comedy concert<\/a> you\u2019re bringing here?<\/p>\n Short: I just think it is a show that we\u2019re very proud of, because it\u2019s kind of wall-to-wall laughs, but it\u2019s also wall-to-wall entertainment<\/p>\n Martin: And I\u2019ll say this: Even though we\u2019re aged \u2014 especially Marty \u2014 we\u2019re not lazy. We do our best to deliver a high-energy, fun, interesting show.
