FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) \u2014 A new stretch of Three Oaks Parkway opened Monday in Lee County, giving drivers another north-south route through Lee and Collier counties.<\/p>\n
Lee County and FDOT officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony after crews finished this phase of the project 18 months ahead of schedule. Officials said the early opening came just in time for season.<\/p>\n
The extension included four divided travel lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the road as part of the Three Oaks Parkway extension project. It connected Daniels Parkway to Alico Road and continued through Estero, Bonita Springs and Collier County.<\/p>\n
Officials said the project aimed to take local traffic off I-75 while easing congestion. The county said opening Three Oaks Parkway early should give drivers relief and a faster commute.<\/p>\n
Dave Wheaton, who lives nearby, is an avid cyclist. Before the extension opened, he described biking through the area as terrifying.<\/p>\n
\u201cI’m sure there’ll be plenty of traffic here, but they made nice big lanes for everybody, sidewalk if you want to get on it. So for everybody, I think this is what’s worked well,\u201d Wheaton said.<\/p>\n
Officials said more work remained to finish connecting the extension to Daniels Parkway.
