That funding could be affected if Amendment 3 passes.

Colleen O’Neil Thayer, CEO of NAMI Central Suncoast, said the amendment could affect the services the organization provides.

“It could impact the level of service, right, so it doesn’t mean that we would have to shut our doors and not serve anyone, but it definitely could impact the amount of support groups we could provide in our community or the education classes,” Thayer said.

Amendment 3 vote could reshape Florida homeowners’ property taxes

Jennifer Propsem first turned to NAMI in 2020 when her daughter was struggling with serious mental health challenges.

“I was meeting dead end after dead end. I’d get referrals, and either they wouldn’t take her insurance, they didn’t take girls, or she was too young,” Propsem said.

Propsem said NAMI connected her with a parent peer, someone who had been through similar experiences and could help her navigate the crisis. She now works on staff at NAMI, helping other families who are going through what she did.

Propsem said the need for mental health support is growing and NAMI is already near capacity.

“If our services were cut in any way, especially for the family and youth programs, it would be very detrimental,” Propsem said.

United Way Suncoast said nonprofits could face less government funding while more people turn to them for help.

“Nonprofits are going to be bridging issues larger than they had previously because of gaps created by Amendment 3 budget cuts,” said Kourtney Sanchez, CEO of United Way Suncoast.

Sanchez said organizations could be left filling gaps in services if local governments face budget cuts. She said philanthropy alone cannot make up for lost funding.

NAMI Central Suncoast and United Way Suncoast said they are preparing for what could come, though there are still unknowns. Both organizations said they are not taking a position on Amendment 3 and are working to educate the community about the potential impact.

Amendment 3 will be on the ballot on Election Day.
