With Election Day just hours away, Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds<\/a> is making one final push in a part of Florida that could play a major role in deciding the state’s next governor.<\/p>\n

Donalds spent his final full day on the campaign trail Monday making three stops across the Tampa Bay region, traveling from Tarpon Springs to Lakeland before wrapping up in Sarasota.<\/p>\n

The campaign appearances underscore the importance of the I-4 corridor, a stretch of the state that runs from Tampa through Orlando and toward Daytona Beach.<\/p>\n

Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly also made a stop in Polk County<\/a> on Monday, highlighting the attention both campaigns are paying to the region in the final hours before voters head to the polls.<\/p>\n

The I-4 corridor accounts for roughly one-quarter of Florida’s voters, making it one of the largest and most consequential voting blocs in the state.<\/p>\n

It is also politically diverse, combining Democratic strongholds like Orange County, competitive areas like Hillsborough County and heavily Republican counties like Polk and Volusia.<\/p>\n

Historically, the I-4 corridor has been a closely watched battleground in Florida politics. The region has voted for the winner of the last seven presidential elections.<\/p>\n

For Donalds, the path to victory will likely require strong performances in the corridor’s Republican-leaning communities, while capitalizing on the Republican advantage elsewhere in the state.<\/p>\n

Jolly, meanwhile, will need to maximize turnout in Democratic strongholds like Orange County and compete in battleground areas like Hillsborough County. He will also need to limit Republican margins in the corridor’s more conservative counties.<\/p>\n

Donalds acknowledged the importance of the region when asked about its role in the governor’s race Monday.<\/p>\n

“Well, every part is important, but we make sure that we go to where there’s just a lot of densely populated areas,” Donalds said. “We know everybody knows it’s no secret about how many voters live in the Tampa Bay region, I-4 region, and so we just want to make sure we talk to everybody in our state.”<\/p>\n

In Donalds’ final pitches to voters, he emphasized his plans to make Florida more affordable, focus on law and order and keep Florida as what he described as the greatest state in the country.<\/p>\n
