(KATV) — Jacksonville High School is unique for several reasons, but perhaps more so for its fully functioning restaurant that is open to the public.

The restaurant, Simply Delicious, has been remarked for its excellent food, reasonable prices, and service with a smile. And guess what? It is almost completely run by high school students.

Bailey Holt, the Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Jacksonville High School says the students are “learning the recipes, cooking, we have waitresses, waiters. So, it’s running like an actual restaurant.”

Simply Delicious was originally started at North Pulaski High School, then transferred over when the city’s two high schools combined. And after the program briefly stopped, it is back in full force for this school year, open Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The restaurant also has a new menu every week.

But not all of the restaurant’s staff are students. Chef Xavier Greene was a product of the program in 2006 and now helps run the show in the kitchen.

“We have some stellar items on our menu like our rolls and our alfredo that are top sellers,” says Greene, who helps develop the menu.

And don’t worry, all of these students have their Food Handler Certification according to Holt.

Though they do not receive a course credit, they are still receiving a grade and potentially kickstarting a career in the culinary arts.

“Maybe they want to go to culinary school, or they just want to be a hotel worker, or a food and beverage director,” states Greene.

Students like junior Michael London are now considering exploring a career in the restaurant industry.

“Not going to lie at first, it was like, ‘dang, I’m in a cooking class,’ I never thought anything of it,” says the self-proclaimed “chef maestro.”

“But then as it went, I just started liking it. Learn how to cook, learn how to prep food.”

“So, I definitely see myself in the future doing more cooking stuff, especially grill work. I love the grill; I love the stove.”

The question of the hour: is Simply Delicious actually good?

KATV’s Chris Gay decided to stay for lunch last week and ordered one of the restaurant’s staples: the Cajun chicken alfredo for just $13, which came with multiple garlic herb and honey dinner rolls.

To answer your question, KATV Chris Gay gave it 5 stars.

But the restaurant’s work is not just inside, as they also cater, having catered for the first time for the Retired Teachers Association event recently, according to Greene.

JACKSONVILLE, Ark.
