JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 A man armed with a gun, who was critically injured when he was shot by two officers at a Northside apartment complex, is facing charges related to the incident and is in the U.S. illegally, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
The man, identified by JSO as 44-year-old Jerson Felipe Estrada Gonzalez, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and discharge of a firearm on residential property.<\/p>\n
Officers saw Estrada Gonzalez around 6 p.m. Sunday when they responded to a report of shots being fired at an apartment complex on Broxton Bay Drive on the city\u2019s Northside.<\/p>\n
JSO said the officers heard six shots while they were speaking with a woman at the scene, and when they went to find where the shots were coming from, they found Estrada Gonzalez.<\/p>\n
During the encounter, JSO said, Estrada Gonzalez ignored the officers\u2019 orders to stop, show his hands and drop his weapon, and at one point, he turned toward them holding the gun.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when the two officers fired at him.<\/p>\n
He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and remained hospitalized on Tuesday but was listed as stable. No officers were hurt in the incident, JSO said.<\/p>\n
JSO said investigators learned that Estrada Gonzalez, who was twice deemed ineligible to be in the U.S., had an adjudication of removal from the country in April 2023 and has previous arrests in Virginia and North Carolina.<\/p>\n
JSO said this was the agency\u2019s 16th officer-involved shooting this year.<\/p>\n
