MURDOCK \u2014 Kim Amontree will take the Charlotte County Commission seat for District 4.<\/p>\n
Amontree, a Republican, won 65.55% of votes against independent candidate Michael Melton.<\/p>\n
The position was previously held by Republican Stephen R. Deutsch. Amontree won 63,325 votes to 33,277,<\/p>\n
Amontree served as the District 2 representative for the Charlotte County School Board before entering the County Commission race. She has lived in the community for 35 years. She said her biggest concerns are property tax increases and improving the region\u2019s infrastructure to match growth and storm resistance.<\/p>\n
Amontree said she wants to keep the waterways clean and impose term limits for government positions. She also plans to keep the commission seat from controversy.<\/p>\n
Amontree calls herself a fiscal conservative and wants to reduce government spending.<\/p>\n
The Daily Sun reached out to Amontree on Tuesday night, but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n
Melton owns and operates Enterprise Engineering Service, an engineering firm in Charlotte County. He was born and raised in Englewood.<\/p>\n
Melton wanted to approach the County Commission seat with the perspective of a local engineer.<\/p>\n
Around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Melton was feeling pretty optimistic about voter turnout. He had visited Babcock Ranch\u2019s polling location.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bigger the turnout, the better for our campaign,\u201d Melton said.<\/p>\n
Melton campaigned for more government transparency and protections for water quality.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere seems to be a general feel amongst the constituency that the commission doesn\u2019t listen to their opinions, even though some of them are highly technical and skilled in their profession,\u201d Melton said. \u201cI want to repair that damage and empower local citizens so their voice carries more weight.\u201d<\/p>\n
Melton said he appreciates the community\u2019s support.<\/p>\n
