BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA \u2013 Senior Resource Alliance, in partnership with Scent Evidence K9 and the U.S. Department of Justice, donated a scent-discriminating K9 to the Brevard County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Max, a one-year-old bloodhound, underwent hundreds of hours of extensive training to be able to find missing persons, particularly those with Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other forms of dementia.<\/p>\n

He recently started patrolling alongside his handler, Dep. Brittany Rowland.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople with dementia are more likely to wander, and when that happens, every minute counts,\u201d said Karla Radka, President & CEO of SRA. \u201cThis donation means Brevard County families can be reunited with their loved ones faster, minimizing stress during what can be a terrifying situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, SRA has also provided the sheriff\u2019s office with 550 scent kits, which can be used to store someone\u2019s unique smell. If that person wanders away, K9 first responders can use the kit to find them and bring them home quicker.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe use of bloodhounds and scent kits in many cases has been instrumental in locating and reuniting missing persons with their families,\u201d said Sheriff Wayne Ivey of the Brevard County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe donation of K9 Max by the Senior Resource Alliance to the Sheriff\u2019s Office is another example of community resources and law enforcement collaborating to protect the citizens of Brevard County.\u201d<\/p>\n

The donation is part of SRA\u2019s Bringing the Lost Home project, an initiative that has provided four Central Florida law enforcement agencies with a total of seven bloodhounds since 2021. The dogs have located 81 missing persons.<\/p>\n
